Hello mark...according to the manual for Volkswagen Engine and Transmission Codes...

P0101 Mass or volume air flow circuit performance problem

P3131 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Control Limit Exceeded

Dirt and carbon build up will cause this in some cases. You might try removing and cleaning the MAF sensor with an electrical contact cleaner first. You will still need to clear the error codes with VAG-COM and see if they return.

Good luck...i hope this helps.

Code P0101 indicates a bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. Didn't see a P3131. If it's P0131, then it's a bad O2 sensor. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

My apologies, Mr BrokRench has P3131 right, it's an EGR problem. There was no P3131 code in Chilton's Manual or

sir I am pretty sure it is the k and n filter...The oil inside the filter at times will **** through and dirty the maf sensor and throw this code...The metering cant hold a proper charge to measure air flow.I have seen this three times...I rcommend a denzo maf sensor and airaid cone air dryer or the mina gallery air dryer. These work flawless....and filter with a oil charge will cause this code.the other two codes are cyle and readiness codes that are performed by the cars ecu each time it is parked to check all modules for malfuction or codes...Remember codes are cycled between every two ignition or crank cycles unless you have complete failer of a module or drive train.

What are these codes and how do I fix them? P0101 P0171 P0174

  • P0101 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance
  • P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
  • P0174 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2
  • Would start with the mass air flow sensor the other two codes may have been triggered by the performance of the MAF sensor. Is the vehicle running poorly or have high or low idle?

CEL light was on changeg plugs and ran octane booster on 2 fill ups. light was off for a week. back on for a day , back off again. Now back on. WTH?

You are going to have to find out what the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is that is causing the CEL to turn on. If you do not have a code reader, or know someone who does, you might want to consider getting one if you are going to be keeping your Civic for any length of time. There are some places that will read the code for free (I think AAMCO will do it for free).

Once you get the code, you will know exactly what the malfunction is and you'll be able to address it directly.
