Question about 1998 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

Hard starting wrangler

My 99 jeep wrangler with a 2.5 engine is hard to start when it sets for over 30 min. It cranks away but takes about 15 sec to start, however if I just bump the starter twice it will easily start the third time. The shop said fuel pressure is ok.

could have an injector leaking a bit..with a four cyl that's one quarter flooded! I use three oz of acetone per 10 gal of fuel to clean system...works better than anything else.(also cuts emissions and gives better mpg.)

After I drive my wrangler for about an hour it shuts off. There are no noises or sounds to indicate when this is going to happen. Also, the engine temp is normal when this happens. When I try to restart it...

Hard starting when cold ( engine cranks normally )

see if your engine has a ECT sensor (temp sensor that delivers information to your ECM) they are installed on the intake side of the cylinder head, it usually has 2 cables, have it checked replace if necesary

Tapping nosie in lower crankcase when starting 2.5L engine

Probably just a hydralic lifter tapping when cold. Change the oil in it and let it warm up before taking off. Be sure and use the correct oil, 10w/30 or whatever the manual says for your climate.

Engine will crank but will not turn over

Do this, take the top off the carb, being careful not to damage the gasket. Then take some carb cleaner and clean out the bowl and floats. Remove the needle valve and clean it out. Put it all back together and filling the bowl with carb cleaner. Start it with the starting fluid. Once you run the carb cleaner through it, it should start to run on it's own. Whatever you do don't shut it off for about 20-30 min unless you have to.

99 jeep wrangler 4.0 backfires and hesitates

Fairly common problem. Typical scenario is start vehicle, runs fine for 15 to 30 seconds and begins to backfire when placed under load as customer tries to drive vehicle. Flooring usually makes the problem go away. Usually does not throw a code.

Fix is to replace the upstream 02 sensor.
