Key won't turn on ignition switch

1997 Camry. Key glitches in the switch and will not turn. Sometimes it will turn if I put in the key and tap it with the back end of a flashlight all around. But now, even that doesn't work. The dealership cut us a new key a couple of months ago (we had it towed in). And now the new key has done the same thing.

1997 Camry 4-cyl auto - key will not turn ignition. Fixed by replacing key with new-Toyota-dealer-key-machine key (more expensive than the traditional key copies). The traditional key copy (instead of new VIN-driven key machine key) did not work. However, now several months later the new keys are beginning fail. I must try the key for 20 - 40 seconds before it will turn the ignition lock.

1997 Toyota Camry Key Wont turn, Ignition Lock problem -1997 toyota camry FIXED!!! I see a lot of Douches with a capital D trying to charge people to fix this extremely common issue with this Camry ignition cylinder. OK pull the plastic guard off encasing the steering column. Get a phillips head screwdriver and remove the 2 screws holding the little off-white connector at the rear of the module(it has the wires to the ignition running to it). Get a pair of pliers or a small crescent wrench and while trying to turn the key use the wrench to turn the little rod sticking out of the back of the module. Make sure your turning it WITH the direction the key is trying to turn it. It should immediate be freed. Voila IT WORKS! AND THATS WHY PEOPLE DONT TRUST MECHANICS! HOW CAN YOU CHARGE SOMEONE FOR THAT INFO?

You likely have a locking steering wheel. Before turning the key, turn the steering wheel a little bit first. It works on my truck. Good luck

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry. The key is stuck in the lock position and won't turn, do I need a new ignition?

Try turning the steering wheel, fairly firmly, while trying the key. Sometimes a significant preload happens when the power assist is helping the wheel positioning, just prior to shutdown.

Have a 1997 buick skylark and my ignition key will not turn and the steering wheel is lock. what can I do?

if the wheels are turned you can try to remove the pressure on the steering wheel by turning the steering wheel just a little and then try turning the the key.sometimes when there is too much pressure against the steering the key won`t turn,if this is the problem.you also can try to use another key as if the one your using is worn enough it may not turn and another one will.if neither of these suggestions will work then you may have to replace the ignition key switch and keys.

Even with ignition key taken out car is stying on

Look at the base of the steering colum on its topside and locate the ignition switch. Thhere are no electrics at the key. The actual switch is operated by a rod by the keypart. The switch is sticking or the linkage to it is out of whackGood Luck.

Cant turn key to start 1997 toyota camry. tried all keys to car. after hours of jiggling key it catches and turns ignition to start. Do I need to replace ignition or tumblers in switch. If so HOW

Hello,
Yes you do need to charge the ignition barrel as it sounds as if the current one knakered, try going to the scrappy but be sure to get a barrel that they have the keys for also remember to keep your other keys for your car.

Best Wishes

try putting tension on steering wheel in either direction while turning key. If no results, ignition switch may be defective.

Key won't turn in Ignition

Have you tried moving the gear shift back and forth? The shifter is connected by a cable to your ignition switch. It keeps folks from putting the car in neutral when the steering and ignition is locked, so they don't take the car when you're not around. If moving the shifter helps, then maybe that cable has stretched some and needs replaced. If not, then perhaps an ignition lock cylinder and key are in order.
