Need to adjust timing

My car is idle up high,(between 1.5 2 rpm) and when I turn the ignition off, it still runs for a couple of seconds then the egine shuts off. "3.5 engine"

    Is the check engine light on? there is 2 things that could cause this but both will log a trouble code. The TPS (throtle position switch) or the IACV (idle air control valve)

    Only the camshaft timing is adjustable and it is done by the timing belt. I would look for a vacuum leak somewhere.

Is the check engine light on? If so you need to have it scanned. Sounds like your idle air control solenoid is not functioning. It could be the control valve itself or electric issues with wiring, switches, relays, computor .... The idle valve when deactivated for any reason defaults to the open position (high idle). It could be just gummed up and needs the throttle body cleaned. Good luck!

The timing on my 1987 dodge dakota is way off. how do i fix it?


You will need to adj. your timing to do this>

REMOVAL

  1. Disconnect distributor pickup lead wire at wiring harness connectors.
  2. Unfasten distributor cap retaining clips and lift off distributor cap.
  3. Scribe a mark on the edge of distributor housing to indicate position of rotor as reference when reinstalling distributor.
  4. Remove distributor hold down clamp screw and clamp.
  5. Carefully lift distributor from engine.
INSTALLATION

  1. Position distributor in engine. Make sure rubber 0-ring seal is in groove of distributor housing. Align rotor with marks previously scribed on distributor housing. Clean top of cylinder block to insure a good seal between distributor base and block.
  2. Engage tongue of distributor shaft with slot in distributor oil pump drive gear.
If engine has been cranked while distributor is removed, it will be necessary to establish the proper relationship between distributor shaft and No.1 piston position as follows:

  1. Rotate crankshaft until number one piston is at top of compression stroke. Mark on crankshaft vibration damper should be in line with "0" TDC mark on timing chain case cover.
  2. Rotate rotor to position of number one distributor cap terminal.
  3. Lower distributor into opening, connect pickup coil leads and install distributor cap. Make sure all high-tension wires "snap" firmly in cap towers. Install distributor hold-down clamp screw. Tighten screw finger tight.
    1. Connect distributor pick-up lead wire(s) at wiring harness connectors.
    2. Adjust engine timing to specification (refer to Ignition Timing).

Basic ignition Timing Adjustment 3.9L Engine

  1. Locate and ground out the carburetor switch idle stop contact with a suitable jumper wire.
  2. Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines at vacuum transducer on the SCC and the air switching valve on the emissions air pump.
  3. Set the gearshift selector in park or neutral and apply the parking brake.
  4. Using a magnetic timing unit, insert the pickup probe into the open receptacle at the left of the engine between the power steering and the water pumps. If a magnetic timing unit is not available, use a conventional power timing light connected to the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
  5. Bring the engine to a normal running temperature. This can be done by allowing the engine to idle for 5 to 10 minutes when the ambient temperature is around 21°C (70°F).
  6. Adjust the engine idle rpm to the specifications on the VECI label in the engine compartment.
  7. Check the basic timing when using a power timing light). If the basic timing is correct, remove the jumper wire, reconnect the vacuum lines and disconnect all test equipment. If the basic timing is NOT correct, proceed to step 8.
  1. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt allowing the distributor to be turned with some resistance and adjust the basic ignition timing to the specifications on the VECI label. After adjusting the basic ignition timing, recheck the idle rpm and secure the distributor. Recheck the timing once again to verify that the timing is correct.
  2. Remove the jumper wire, reconnect the vacuum lines and check the idle rpm (adjust if necessary), disconnect all test equipment.
  1. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt allowing the distributor to be turned with some resistance and adjust the basic ignition timing to the specifications on the VECI label. After adjusting the basic ignition timing, recheck the idle rpm and secure the distributor. Recheck the timing once again to verify that the timing is correct.
  2. Remove the jumper wire, reconnect the vacuum lines and check the idle rpm (adjust if necessary), disconnect all test equipment.

unplug cruise contoll cabel at trottle body some times these get jamed not letting trottle return remove cable to see if this is your prob.

Noise at shut down


The noise is caused by the engine running on after the ignition is shut off. It makes noise because the pistons are rattling in the cylinders from incorrect timing. This has nothing to do with the mechanical or electronic timing of the engine. The engine runs on either because of hot glowing carbon deposits in the cylinder head or because the engine was shut down when it was running too fast. Sometimes the carbon can be literally blown out by running the engine at high rpm for a short time. Put it in second gear and run it for a couple of miles on the highway. If this does not work the heads will have to be removed and the carbon cleaned out manually. The shut down when running too fast problem can be caused by the idle being set too high or by shutting the engine off before it has reached idle speed. If you can adjust the idle speed try reducing it. If not always hesitate before shutting the engine down to let it reach idle speed. Good Luck!

How to I set idle speed?


Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay. CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Drive ability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
NOTE: Idle mixture is controlled by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Adjustment is not possible. After replacement of Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, system must be cycled as identified for PCM to properly control idle speed. If idle speed is not okay after cycling system, problem is usually caused by a dirty throttle plate or vacuum leaks. Ensure all vacuum components are functioning properly.

IDLE SPEED (4-CYLINDER)
Turn ignition on with engine off for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Start engine and idle for 30 seconds. Slowly vary engine speed between idle and 3500 RPM 5 times. Return engine to idle. PCM will now properly control idle speed. 2.2L (Cavalier & Sunfire) & 2.4L (Alero, Cavalier, Grand Am & Sunfire)  Good luck and hope this helps. If it still has the high idle problem, your going to have to buy a can  if not two cans ot THROTTLE BODY CLEANER NOT CARBURATOR CLEANER. Just follow the instruction on the can and try to get the Idle Air Control Valve cleaned also which is on the sdie of the throttle body so go to town when cleaning the throttle body and then do the Idle speed relearn again. The other thing to is since your doing house cleaning, buy a MAF sensor cleaner and spray down your MAF sensor and IAT sensor also, this will help with your fuell consumption.

You may have a bad control valve or regulator. Did you adjust the idle properly?

1. Disconnect the connector on top
2. Adjust idle to around 650-700k rpm
3. Reconnect the electrical connection

After reconnecting, the idle should jump up around 700-750k rpm.
The idle screw is fail safe setting in case the ecu cannot set the idle. The rpm's set by the idle screw are supposed to be below the ecu/stock idle.

If this doesn't work, you may have a dirty or bad Idle Air Adjuster and/or Air Regulator. For information on cleaning that, you can refer to this page http://s95014253.onlinehome.us/63104/157335.html

You can test the IAA by supplying power to the plug with the car off. Listen for any clicks or humming. That will signify that it still may be working but is possibly stuck. The Air Regulator is for high idle for warming up your car. It has a bi-metal spring inside that rotates a disc closing off an airway to bring idle to normal after a couple minutes. If it dies it will stay open and give you permanent high idle. If it gets clogged usually no high idle for warm up.
You can remove it and peer through the end. If you see a thin sliver of light, it's open. Connect 12 volts + & -, wait a few minutes and see if it's now closed. If not, it's likely dead. It can be opened and cleaned if that's the issue.

Since this is an intermittent problem, first try to determine if the problem arises due to one of these many intermittent problems:

* Freezing

Ensure engine stays below 1,000 rpm.
3. Open engine hood and run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.
4. Perform diagnostic test mode II (Self-diagnostic results).
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 2.
NG ' 1. Repair or replace components as necessary.

1. Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature indicator points to the middle of gauge.
2. Rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed.

a. Disconnect the resistor from terminals of engine coolant temperature sensor.
b. Connect engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector to engine coolant temperature sensor.
OK or NG
OK ' 1. Replace front heated oxygen sensor LH.
2. GO TO 10.
NG ' GO TO 20.

20 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
1. Connect front heated oxygen sensor harness connectors to front heated oxygen sensors.
2. Check fuel pressure regulator.
3. Check mass air flow sensor and its circuit.
4. Check injector and its circuit.
Clean or replace if necessary.
5. Check engine coolant temperature sensor and its circuit.
6. Check ECM function by substituting another known good ECM.
(ECM may be the cause of a problem, but this is rarely the case.)
' GO TO 2.
