Question about 2008 Jeep Cherokee Grand
Key fob will not unlock liftgate. The manual says there is a panel to remove to expose a release. There is a 1" diameter circle in the center of the gate that pops off but I don't see any release. How do I get the lift gate open?
2/3 of the way down this page with pictures
All WJs feature an emergency unlock/lock switch lever for the liftgate. Should the liftgate become locked and unable to be opened due to a switch or circuit failure, a manual unlock/lock lever is accessible behind a small panel on the interior trim panel. As shown in the photos above, the lever can be moved up or down to unlock or lock the liftgate door.

Remove the trim from inside the vehicle and release the latch rod manually. Once it is open you can further diagnose the problem. It may just need to be lubed from the inside.

You need to remove the panel from the liftgate and unlock and open it manually at the latch. It is not fun, but you can get the panel off with the hatch closed.

SOURCE: liftgate and glass doesn't open
you have to get in behind tailgate interior trim and pull handle lever as this has come off from the actuator, once tailgate is opened remove panel and relocate actuator bar and you might want to cable tie bar in place for the future

Look for the pin switch on the body where the lift gate is. The switch could be stuck, broken, or corroded. Theres a pin switch on every door to turn on the inside lights, and sometimes they fail. Make sure it is clean, and moves easily. If its stuck, a shot of WD-40 will get it going again. If no matter what you do, you cant get it working properly, replace it.
