Need to replace heater core in 76 Eldorado convertible

Looking for a simpler approach than that in the factory service manual which essentially starts with, "remove the dash." I cannot figure out how to remove the heater core from a 76 Ford truck. It all appears to be one piece encasing the core itself under the glove box. Any help? The manual seems to spell it out as a simple removal but I must be missing something. No A/C.

Not sure if this will help but this is on a 2001 Eldo which should be close to what you have. I would also suggest the library and check out a Chilton's repair manual for you car.

How to replace the heater core

1

Lift up your car's hood and locate the heater core. If you are not sure where the core is located, an auto parts store employee or a repair manual can help.
2

Remove the screws or bolts that hold the heater core in place. You may need to remove other parts of the car before being able to access the heater core.

3

Disconnect the intake and outtake hoses from the heater core. You may need a special tool to remove the couplings that connect the hoses to the heater core; refer to your car model's repair manual.
4

Remove the heater core. Be careful not to tip the core over, as coolant will leak out.
5

Reconnect the upstream and downstream hoses on the new heater core in the same matter that they were attached to the faulty core. Leaks can occur if the hoses are not connected properly.
6

Screw or bolt new heater core in place. Finally, replace all of the removed car parts.

Need to change heater core

The dash has to be removed to gain access to the heater box, a factory repair manual is a 100% must have for this job. The heater box then comes out and is split open to replace the core.
this is not a job for anyone except a experienced mechanic, about 10 hour job, a factory service manual is a must, u can buy a factory manual here.

1983 cadillac eldorado, what i want to know is how do you remove the heater box so you can access the heater core. i am trying to replace the heater core..

You need to remove the glove box. Remove the Programmer from the heater box. The heater box has studs going through the firewall attached with speed nuts on the UNDERHOOD side of the firewall . The nuts on the lower part of the box cannot be seen , so must be felt, and then removed. Place rags on both openings of heater core so as not to leak any coolant into the car. Heater box once unbolted must be artfully removed from UNDER the dashboard. Hope this helps

Need to replace heater core in 76 Eldorado convertible

You dont have to remove the dash but it might make it a easier job if you did. The heater core is removed from under the R/S dash. after removing the lower dash covers, glove BOX, A/C programmer. Then from under the hood, disconnecting heater hoses, and removing heater case mounting bolts. Then finally jockying the heater box from under the dash without spilling coolant fronm the heater core is a trick. Hope this helps.
