Is it possible to read fault codes without a code reader? like on older vehicles when you get the check engine light to flash the sequences.

    P0411 is the code that came up on autozone's scanner. it says possible fuse, connection, or the air pump is bad. all fuses checked out good, just don't know where to go from there.

No, OBD II rquires a scanner. Go to Autozone, they will scan for free.

    P0411 is Secondary Air Injection Incorrect Upstream Flow Detected.



    This is not a biggie, you just aren't meeting emissions.

    You did not say if you had V 6 or V 8.



    Assuming V6, #3 is your issue. But, try this first. Disconnect your battery for 1/2 hour. Reconnect and drive for 10 miles so computer can relearn your engine controls. It may run rough during this time. See if that turns MIL light out. Please rate as solved issue if this helps.



    Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System Monitor—Electric Secondary Air Injection Pump System
    The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System Monitor is an on-board strategy designed to monitor the proper function of the secondary air injection system. The AIR Monitor for the Electric Secondary Air Injection Pump system consists of two monitor circuits: an AIR circuit to diagnose concerns with the primary circuit side of the solid state relay (SSR), and an AIR Monitor circuit to diagnose concerns with the secondary circuit side of the SSR. A functional check is also performed that tests the ability of the AIR system to inject air into the exhaust. The functional check relies upon HO2S sensor feedback to determine the presence of air flow. The monitor is enabled during AIR system operation and only after certain base engine conditions are first satisfied. Input is required from the ECT, IAT, and CKP sensors and the HO2S Monitor test must also have passed without a fault detection to enable the AIR Monitor. The AIR Monitor is also activated during on demand self-test.


    1. The AIR circuit is normally held high through the AIR bypass solenoid and SSR when the output driver is off. Therefore a low AIR circuit indicates a driver is always on and a high circuit indicates an open in the PCM.

      The DTC associated with this test is DTC P0412.


    1. The AIR Monitor circuit is held low by the resistance path through the AIR pump when the pump is off. If the AIR Monitor circuit is high there is either an open circuit to the PCM from the pump or there is power supplied to the AIR Pump. If the AIR Monitor is low when the pump is commanded on, there is either an open circuit from the SSR or the SSR has failed to supply power to the pump.

      The DTCs associated with this test are DTCs P1413 and P1414.


    1. The functional check may be done in two parts: at startup when the AIR pump is normally commanded on, or during a hot idle if the startup test was not able to be performed. The flow test relies upon the HO2S to detect the presence of additional air in the exhaust when introduced by the Secondary Air Injection system.

      The DTC associated with this test is DTC P0411.


    1. The MIL is activated after one of the above tests fail on two consecutive drive cycles.

      HM7 VISUALLY INSPECT ELECTRIC AIR PUMP HOSES
      DTC P0411 indicates Secondary Air not detected. In order to test the pump, it must be capable of driving the HO2S lean.

    • Visually inspect electric AIR pump hoses from the electric AIR pump to the AIR diverter valves.
    • Inspect air hose for cracks, binding, obstructions, water or ice.

    HM15 CHECK AIR PUMP FOR WATER

      Note: Water ingested in the electric AIR pump will reduce the life of the pump.

    • Disconnect electric AIR pump connector and air hoses.
    • Carefully tilt electric AIR pump in various positions to verify if any water is present.

Yes.  Next to the ash tray there is a black slide off plate that reveals the OBD I plug.  {1996 and newer can be read with an OBD II reader (read for free at Advance auto or Auto Zone)}  Once you reveal this plug on the 1995, you can plug in a single jumper wire (or even a paper clip) in the #4 and #15 pin hole.  There are two rows of pin holes, count from the upper right to the #4, then on to #15 (which will be the second to last pin hole).  Turn the ignition switch on (motor not running), insert the jumper wire for about 3 to 5 seconds, then remove the wire.  The ENGINE LIGHT will flash a hold, then the code, which will go something like this, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, flash, flash.  Then it will repeat the codes if you just sit there and observe it.  The code in my example would be a 2214 code.

How to access trouble code


year vehicle manufactured? if 1996 & later, OBDII scanner to be plugged into a port (typically, should be near the steering column, under the dash).
older models may have OBDI (no standard location of port) scanner specific to the make of the vehicle. search the web, on how to read manually (or without scanner) the code by counting the number of blinks of the MIL (malfunction Indicator light) (aka check engine, or service engine soon).

What is a CO sensor? Never heard of it. a 1999 OBD2 ford has approximately 1600 possible fault codes most of which can turn on the light. If you dont know which one is turning it on, you are guessing randomly which is expensive and usually unsuccessful. get the code(s) and then diagnose the possible causes. The vehicle you list (99 4L explorer) rarely had injector problems. Much more common were EGR sensor(DPFE) sticking at voltage, evap problems, misfires, and lean conditions due to dirty MAF, or vacuum leaks. get the fault code, or you will not fix the problem.

go to Advanced Auto or any other parts store, they will usually read the codes for free. Without a code reader, you can not troubleshoot the code.

Their is a fault with the electronics on one of the vehicles electrical circuits, or one of the sensors is activated and reading a mechanical fault. This will bring up the malfunction indicator light, you will need to see a dealer with an electronics reader to find out what this fault code is meaning. Some dealers will read it for free, and then charge for the repair from that point. If it was a false code they will also reset it for free, althogh i have heard some dealers can charge up to $100. OR you can even hire a fault code reader from an automotive parts store and read it yourself. If it is an orange light, just get it to a dealer when you are able to. If it is a red light, avoid driving it and get to a dealer ASAP. this will prevent any further possible electrical damage and any other mechanical damage from what ever the fault maybe. Also, their is a safety issue if the fault is relating to a safety feature of the car. It is hard to pin point an exact fault and exact cost. Cost will vary with the type of fault. Once repaired, the dealer will be able to reset the light for you. Goodluck

I have a 1997 Chevy Blazer with the 4.3 engine. The Service Engine light keeps coming on. I scanned the codes and replaced the O2 sensor just before the catalytic converter. The light is still coming on...

Pending codes and DTCs? Posted on November 12, 2010 by fcrmaster
When reading codes from your vehicle the fault code reader may show them as pending codes or normal Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
Pending codes (also known as continuous monitor codes) will be registered when an intermittent fault occurs. If that fault does not happen again after x number of start/stop cycles, the ECU will erase the code from memory. If the fault is persistent it becomes a DTC.
If you have read pending codes it is advisable to check the codes again after a week or so. If there is no apparent problem with the vehicle it is safe to erase the codes too and check back. But always make a note of any fault codes with the date and mileage of a vehicle.
If the codes read include a DTC then you need to investigate further. This you can either do yourself or advise your garage. If, again, you don't see an apparent problem (depending n the severity of the code) with the vehicle you can note the codes down and erase them. Then check again after a week or a few days depending on how often the vehicle gets used. If a repair has been made (previous owner) the DTC may just not have been reset after the repair.

Can I get the fault codes without using a reader?


You will have to use a "reader". All vehicles manufactured after 1995 are termed OBDII (Onboard Diagnostics II) and the diagnostics can only be accessed with a OBDII reader. Prior to 1996, OBDI vehicles could "flash" fault codes on the check engine light. The good news is that many retail auto parts stores will let you use their reader right in the parking lot!

Please do a little research on the codes you do find before you purchase a replacement part. The problem might be a bad connection to a sensor(s), worn sparkplug(s) / wire(s) or simply a dirty air cleaner.

1999 Honda Civic EX fault codes 1366 and 1399


This code is not documented so the code reader is giving a false reading.
If the car runs OK and check engine light is not on, I would forget about it.
