Question about 1996 Dodge Intrepid
I have a 1996 Dodge Interpid it has started to not shift right when driving. However if I put the car in neatral (while still moving)and turn it off and then back on it shifts fine but sometimes when i stop at a light and start going again or slow down for a corner i have the same problem and have to do the same thing again. It also sometimes will start shaking and the same thing.
When the car gets stuck in second gear, this is called limp in mode. that is a safety feature biult in to keep from further transmission dammage. these cars have a common problem with the solenoid packs inside the transmission. if the tranny doesn't slip or act funny at all untill it goes into limp mode i would say that this solenoid pack is your problem. i have had to replace countless numbers of these.to replace is a little bit of a job. you have to drop the pan, take off the shift linkage, remove the valve body bolts, dissconnect the wire harness, and then remove the solenoid pack bolts and swap packs. if you are not familiar with the inside of the tranny it would pay to have a proffesional to do the job. speed sensors could be another cause but i have found the solenoid pack to be more prone to problems on these particular vehicles. first place to start would be a scan to make sure the codes point to the pack. i believe there is a technical service bulletin on this problem.
