No, times have changed. Now you have a small black plug located under your steering column somewhere with a cap on it. You either buy a meter and plug it in there or you can go to an Autozone and ask them to come out and hook their hand held code reader to it and they can tell you the codes and what they mean. They can also erase them for you, but if the problem(s) isn't corrected yet they will come back on. I recommend that you go to Autozone as that is free.

Your '89 has no OBD plug in. To retrieve codes, turn key on, off, on, off, on, off, and then leave on. (Cycle key 3 times on-off, then leave in ON, do not start engine.) Codes will begin to flash on the check engine light (cel). All codes are only 2 digits. Probably see a code 12-one long flash and two short flashes-code 12 is normal, disregard it. If you have to, keep repeating the codes until you get them all. Post them here, or google the codes for help.

Engine light came on while driving

You can get the trouble code by turning the key to run (not start) then back one click...repeat 3 times total ending in the run position. The trouble code will either display in your odometer, or be a series of flashes( number of flashes, pause, flashes etc. = a number) on your check engine light. write it down. Do a google search to tell you what the code represents. The most common cause is a loose or missing gas cap.

I have a 96 dodge stratus es with the 2.5L V-6. When I do the engine code thing with the key the check engine light flashes 21 times. What does that mean?

You have to count the number of flashes between delays. For example, the light flashes twice, pauses briefly, then flashes 4 times. This problem code is 24. The end of the trouble code is 55, which is 10 flashes so you have at least 2 trouble codes on your vehicle.

My 2001 dodge stratus engine lights keeps coming on

With the car off, turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine. Then turn the key back to the off position.

Repeat this three times. The electronic odometer will display the engine trouble codes which are 4-digit numbers that help diagnose engine problems. When those problems are resolved, the light should go out.

To find out what the 4-digit codes mean, check here.

When i turn my key position to on the check engine light blinks 3 times stops and repeats

thats your on board computer telling you that all is fine with your car. if there is trouble,it will blink as you stated, then be followed by a series of erratic blinks, these are called trouble codes, and tell you what part is going bad.

1996 dodge avenger when cold, the transmission go in limp mode

Is the vehicle's Check Engine Light on? It should briefly light up when you turn the key on (before you start the engine) to show that the light is working correctly. Based on what I've read I believe you should have one or more trouble codes. A place like AutoZone will read the trouble codes for you for free, and you can look them up here - http://www.engine-light-help.com/generic-check-engine-light-codes.html
