Question about 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis

'00 Mercury GM - oil all ran out, engine seized - runs poorly now

Approximately 5 weeks ago, I was changing the oil in my 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis (which ran like new) and made 2 terrible mistakes. 1st, I thought to drain old oil - you were supposed to turn the engine on. I took the old oil filter off, turned it on, ran briefly through all the gears & reversed a couple of feet. 2nd, I had bought the wrong size filter so I put the old filter back on, I re-filled the oil, checked the level...all seemed good. I did not realize the gasket had fallen off of the old filter. I drove the car about 4 miles & it just died and would not re-start (I tried turning it over about 6 or 7 times). The engine was seized. I had it pulled back home (4 miles) and my friend got it started again that same night. (He says he just kept trying to turn it over til it finally turned over. Since then it runs...but runs terrible now. The check engine light stays on & sometimes blinks when pulling a hill. Acceleration power is nowhere near what it was & it has a hard time with hills, esp. at lower speeds...sometimes kinda jerks when accelerating (esp.up hills), tho not as much at higher speeds (like over 45mph) when idling in drive it acts like its about to die (but hasn't)...its hard to start...it runs better with overdrive off & with cruise control on...the mpg is slowly but surely declining, It was at 22.7mpg before this catastrophe, now it's 19.9mpg It's SO sad! I don't know what to do! I don't have the $ to take it to a dealer or good mechanic! I've tried unplugging the battery to reset the battery... Checked all the plugs, 2 were soiled & we cleaned them but it didn't seem to make a difference...I put "Marvel Mystery Oil" in the gas tank & "Lucas" in the oil...it seemed to run a little bit better after I put in the additives. All the (non expert) people I ask have conflicting & various opinions. One guy tells me I should flush the oil system with diesel fuel; he says with engine already warm, to drain the old oil put the filter back on, put in the same amount of diesel fuel as oil was in it turn engine on DO NOT PRESS gas pedal, run for 10 minutes, drain & refill with new oil...Should I do that? Should I try using synthetic oil? "Slick 50"? I've been told everything (by non experts) from, my engine is ruined to damaged ball bearing to if I'm lucky just the catalytic converter...Isn't there some way to get it to run a self diagnostic?

Your problem is that you ran the engine without oil. In doing so, you damaged most (if not all) the bearings in the engine. There is nothing you can do to make this engine better except to do a complete rebuild. Bad bearings will result in extra internal friction. Thus engine will run terrible, probably knock, have less power, and use more gas.

Spark plug gap

The correct gap is 0.054 Don't for get to buy the anti seize for the plug so it's easier to replace the next time your replace them and if you use Platinum Spark Plugs, your good for 100.000 miles before they need to be changed if your engine is running 100% on emissions. Good luck and hope this helps.

Oil ran out- running poorly now

Your engine needs to be replaced. Operating without lubrication has done severe damage to the bearings and components that must be continually lubricated. Don't waste your time putting diesel fuel in the engine. There are 2 options, buy a rebuilt engine, or one from a junk yard. You can have engine codes checked for free at most parts stores, there is always the slight chance it would reveal some component malfunction that is contributing to the poor running condition. A hand held scan tool is plugged into the diagnostic port under the dash in your car, which reads any codes stored on the cars computer. The parts store can tell you what they mean and suggest how to fix any problems. Write down the code #'s and post any further questions here. Good luck.
