Please state what the trany fluid is that your using. There are many types and for fords it is usually a mercon type fluid. Dexron is another type but is usually used in chevy tranys and CANNOT be used as a subsitute.

Ford ATF is different from Dexron. Ford fluid contains banana oil, Dexron doesn't. Use only what it calls for. Or, you will always wonder. Good Luck.

I have a "96 Chrysler

Open the hood and look from the driverside, look back and down you will be looking at the trany and at the top you will see the linkage arm with the cable going to it, have someone move it through the gears with engine off!!!!, and see if the arm is moving, if the arm is moving then you may have trany problems, these tranys are known for problems, good luck. hope this helps. also heres a diagram to help you locate the arm at trany.johnjohn2_59.gif

If the trany fliud is full then i would say yes replace the trany,be sure to flush out all the cooler lines and the cooler itself. if your useing a used trany make sure to install a new front and rear seals and also replace the filter and pan gasket, good look.

Service trans every 2 years or 24,000 miles.Buy a trans filter kit, remove trans oil pan, replace or clean filter(some tranys has a wire mesh screen in them that is cleaned, not replaced),replace oil pan & refill with recommended amount & proper type of fluid.REMEMBER THIS:CLEANLINESS IS GODLINESS WHEN WORKING ON AUTO TRANS,DON'T LEAVE ANY PIECES OF RAGS OR ANY OTHER MATERIAL INSIDE OF TRANS!!!

Where do you check the fluid in the auto trans on a 96 golf gti

If you look right behind the battery in front of the trany near the linkage for the shifter you should see a small dip stick near the bottom of the trany its very hard to see do too its location.

Have the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes, and repair any codes.More than likely the trans needs a rebuild. If the fluid smelled burnt, then obviously clutches or bands are burnt inside the trans.Changing the fluid just got rid of the smell, whatever is burnt is still hurnt. It is best to stop driving the vehicle,as continuing to drive it will just cause more damage to whatever is damaged. Those transmissions are prone to pump problems too.
