First remove caliper slider assembly & caliper. Will need to probably spray penetrating oil around rotor hub. Hit rotor on side of hub with sledge hammer & it will slide off. Inside are your emergency brake shoes.
Loosen both front wheel lug nuts and raise car and support on jack stands. Remove wheels and have a friend hold brake pedal down and remove axle nut. Use a chisel or screwdriver to remove stake on nut to axle edge. I use a 3/4 drive set socket and remove axle nut. Rent it from Autozone. Remove caliper assy and support with coat hanger or bungee cord to hold weight of assy off of brake hose. Remove Cotter pin and nut on lower control arm. Separate with ball joint fork and pull strut assy away to the side while pulling stub axle through and out of the way. Remove 4 bolts holding rotor and hub assy. on the inside of steering knuckle and separate. Now remove 4 bolts on hub's outer side and separate rotor and hub. You can use a bar or large screwdriver between wheel studs to loosen the 4 bolts.
Front hub bearing, remove tire, remove caliper and caliper holding bracket, you do not have to remove brake caliper from brake hose, just set it aside, if 4X4 remove front axle nut that goes through center of rotor, also remove brake rotor, disconnect elec, A.B.S connector, remove three bolts on back side of hub bearing, remove hub bearing, some times you will need to knock hub bearing out with a hammer.Reverse to install new hub bearing.
Should only take about an hour, remove tire then remove caliper and caliper mounting bracket, remove brake rotor, on back side of hub bearing there is there bolt's that hold hub bearing remove bolt's and unplug A.B.S connector, slide bearing outwards some time you will need a hammer to knock it out then install new one.
this code is located on a module on inside left rear panel where your
car jack is located you will need a flashlight to look up on the module there will be a sticker on this module with 5 digits this will be the original factory code to lock or unlock your car . inside your owners manual there is a procedure to change the code .
The vehicle will need to raised on the left (drivers) side and supported. Remove the tire, then the brake caliper assy. Remove the rotor, then remove the axle nut located in the center of the hub assy. Remove the hub/bearing retaining bolts, and then the hub assy. Some times it is corroded into the steering knuckle assy. and will not seem to come out. If this happens, install the axle nut, and wearing safety glasses, pound onto the hub flange from the inside to the outside, until it comes out of the knuckle assy. Then remove the hub assy. Clean the knuckle hole where the bearing with 120 grit sand paper, so the hub/bearing assy will go into the knuckle without damage. Torque the axle nut to specs. Clean the inside of the rotor, where the hub meets it, so it sits flat against the new hub. Install the rotor, caliper assy. Install the wheel and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft pounds. Road test about 5 miles and recheck the lug nuts.
Disk Brakes - remove two 14mm bolts which mount the caliper to the rear hub assy. Remove the caliper. Remove the phillips screw which holds the rotor to the hub. Machine the rotor and reinstall on the hub & reinstall the phillips screw. Reinstall the caliper and remove one of the caliper hinge pin (sliding pin) 14mm bolts. Flip the caliper out of the way and replace the pads and anti-rattle springs. Recompress the caliper piston all the way back into its cylinder. Flip the caliper back into position and reinstall the 14mm bolts. Of course, you need to purchase the replacement pads and w/anti-rattle springs.
On the heavy-duty models like this one (and mine) the rotors are indeed pressed on. The whole assembly comes off via four bolts on the inside of the assembly. Look in a Chilton's or Hayne's at your local auto parts store to see it with pictures.
Do not just hammer away as the previous ignoramus suggested. They'll never come off and you'll just end up breaking something.
1995 thru 2001 is located in the jack storage compartment in the rear of your Explorer. First remove the panel to the jack storage compartment. Towards the front of this area you should see a metal box this is your auto-lock module(way up front next to your rear left passenger seat). On the back side of this is your 5 digit code factory preset code. It is hard to get to. To see it you will have to loosen, pull, use a flashlight or a mirror but it can be done.
