Question about 1995 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

Automatic transmission not shifting

I really know nothing about cars but I am trying to help my boyfriend who is somewhat clueless when it comes to cars but likes to think he knows alot. Anyway, I sent an earlier post but neglected to mention a few other details. He was washing the car and decided to pressure wash the engine (I'm not even sure you're suppose to do that) and that's when this problem occured, we're guessing. The transmission will only shift after letting off the gas and then you have to give it gas before it will shift again. Could the pressure washing have done something to cause this problem?

Yes, you probably got water in the TPS, Throttle Position Sensor, mounted on the throttle body. It has a huge affect on trans shifting. Remove the electrical connector and dry it with a hair dryer on low heat. Never pressure wash an engine compartment. Too many sensitive electronic parts these days.

Throttle Position (TP) Sensor The throttle position sensor (TP sensor) (9B989):

  • Is a potentiometer.
  • Provides a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) which is directly proportional to the throttle plate position.
  • Is mounted to the throttle body (9E926) and engages the throttle plate shaft.

Abs light on wont shift out of park

Hi Judy , what kind of vehicle do you have ? Year an model ? ABS light has nothing to do with it not coming out of park . Problem with automatic transmission shift lock control ! Probably !
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.

?€¢
The park/neutral safety switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The park/neutral safety switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to de-energize. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the contacts in the neutral safety switch open and the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is de-energized.

Can I flat tow a 2001 Ford Taurus car behind my RV

If it is a stick shift this may be fine, but if an automatic, the transmission may require that you run a transmission cooler while you are towing. I'm not really sure about how your Ford is set up though, so please seek more advice than mine. I just know there can be issues on FWD cars with automatics.

Not sure what the problem is but my car will not shift out of the low gear, it runs about 3500rpm @ 45 mile/hr. Can it be a frozen water pump?

your water pump has nothing to do with the transmission or how it does or doesn't shift...If you only have one forward gear, I'd look first at the shift cable and it's ability to move the shift pawl on the side of the trans-and check for other things like fluid level in the trans. You might try disconnecting the negative battery cable for five minutes, just to reset the ECU so it has to relearn all sensor settings and the modules reset. If you come back on here, add the year, model and engine information, it makes it more possible to help with that basic information.

2004 mazda 3 transmission problem

Check transmission fluid. If that is full, try changing the fuel filter. It could be starving for gas, and trying to shift but can't. It could also be the speed sensor, or shift solenoid.

Honda civic 2003 transmission

Its possible that your transmissions Shift Solonoids could be acting erratically, either because they themselves are faulty, or the transmission's ECU is faulty, or maybe even the wiring between the two is somewhat faulty.

However it is also possible that your transmission's Speed Governor is holding too much pressure and doesn't realize it needs to downshift when you start slowing down.

Thirdly it is also possible that your Torque-Converter lockup may be siezed, or the wiring feeding it may be faulty.

Transmission repairs are usually somewhat pricey, and difficult to pinpoint, and fix, and I'm sorry to say that most of these causes to your problem really can't be checked without pulling the transmission out of the car, and disassembling it to see what the problem is.
