THE NORMAL LOCATION FOR A THERMOSTAT IS AT THE END OF THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE ON THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. THERE SHOULD BE A ROUND BALL SHAPED HOUSING HELD IN PLACE WITH TWO OR THREE BOLTS. Possibly the fan is not starting, the radiator is dirty inside or outside.
Check the fan thermostat and motor. Flush the radiator.
Check the hoses for kinks. Check for leaks.

might need to bleed heating system / radiator. Air lock could stop flow of hot water. Check water colour in radiator - if brown and gungy there could be a build up of sludge so radiator flush required.
when dial / lever moved to turn heat on / off see if you can hear anything moving - there should be! Quite often when heater turned on or off small solid wires move valves that are visible under dash and on engine bay firewall. Watch these rods when someone is turning the heater from cold to hot and see if anything is sticking or loose

Van over heats it has a new waterpump and thermostat but there is no heat .........with the thermostat out it wont over heat but still no heat


Sounds like a clogged radiator and heater core. Over use of leak sealants, rust, sludge build up or other debris is likely cause. Remember that the heater core and radiator have very small passages and part of the same system of circulation, so what affects one, will affect the other, Try a good system flush before you invest any more money. Also check your temperature control cable for proper operation for your heat issue.Hope this helps.

Van produces no heat from the heater, engine heats up when driven short distances. Thermostat was replaced, still no heat. coolant level is fine.


Two things are possible. Air in the cooling system, or the system needs to be flushed. You didn't say what year your van is, but I'm sure it use dexcool antifreeze. Dexcool is the orange antifreeze recommended by GM for all their vehicles. The problem is that dex cool attacks gaskets causing gasket failures, especially the intake gaskets. It also can cause buildup in the cooling system causing overheating, or plugging up heater cores. We'll try the easy solution first.We need to get the air out of the system. First, the radiator needs to be higher than the engine. If it isn't, either use drive on ramps or raise the front end with a jack, Remove the radiator cap, put the heater controls on hottest setting, start the engine and let it run. When the coolant gets hot enough, the thermostat should open allowing the coolant to circulate. When it opens, the coolant level will drop in the radiator. Add antifreeze to make it full again. The coolant will drop again and may do so several times. Just keep adding antifreeze each time. continue to do this until the coolant level stabilizes. If the thermostat closes momentarily it will cause coolant to overflow. Not to worry, wait til it opens again and top off the antifreeze. Put the cap back on the radiator and check the heater for heat. If it' still not warm, you may have to flush the radiator.

My van is overheating. The coolant is full. The heater won't get warm. The fan is working.


Check your thermostat to see if it is sticking. You may need to replace it. It is located within the large hose coming from the radiator and at the engine where the bolts attach.

Just flushed rad heater core and block because i had no heat. flushed the system filled with new antifreeze. my temp gauge will change from 150 to 210 I have heat then i dont


Replace the thermostat. I have had bad luck with aftermarket thermostats on this particular year of GM/ Chevy trucks.They tend to stick closed and then fully open, thus causing the temp to sort of surge hot and cold. A good thermostat will slowly open maintaning a good consistant temp. I would recommend spending a little more and getting a GM thermostat.

Thermostat sits under the radiator cap, under that housing is where the thermostat is at, where the upper radiator hose hooks up to the motor, thermostat housing held on with two small bolts.when remove thermostat do it with cold engine.Hope this was very helpful.

Two most common causes of your problem are low coolant ( air in the heater core) and a thermo stat stuck open. If you have a temperature gauge and it is reading on the low side. Like 140 Deg or less, you need a new engine thermostat. Feel the top of the radiator tank after the car has been driven. If it is too hot to touch, the thermostat is no the problem. As the system has been flushed and filled I suspect there is enough coolant. Last item on the list is the coolant valve for the heater core. Many cars have a water valve located in line with the supply pipe to the heater core. This valve may be in the engine compartment or under the dash. Check the heater temperature control and follow the cables. One cable most likly goes to this valve. Maybe a cable retaining clop has fallen off
