Check to see if :
(1)- transfer case is overfilled. If so drain to proper level.
(2)-Vent is clogged or jammed closed. Clean or replace vent.
(3)-Output shaft seal incorrectly installed or damaged. Replace the seal and check contact surface for nicks and scoring.

Hope this helps.

My best advice to you is to buy a repair-service manual specific to your vehicle and follow the tear-down and rebuild procedures. You can buy hard cover books online or download them too.

How can I tell if my water pump is bad in my 2003 mitsubishi montero sport 3.5

If it is leaking coolant out of the weep hole it is bad, if the bearings are noisy it is bad, if the shaft and pulley wobble it is bad.

Is the transfer case and transmission fluid connected or do they run as seperate units on a mitsubishi montero sport 2003

More than likely both units will use atf, but will run as separate units. There should be drain and fill plugs on the transfer case. Plug towards the bottom of the case would be the drain, plug about halfway up would be the fill. Add fluid untill it runs out of this mid-position plug and replace the plug.

Transfer case shifter is locked up in 2H on 4x4 montero sport 2002

Mine did the same thing so I removed the center console and then the boot around transfer case shifter and the shifter it self.
This is when I discovered a broken linkage that had wedged itself between the 4L & 4H shafts in the transfer case. I removed the broken parts and reassembled and it will shift between 2H & 4H but not 4L until the broken plastic linkage is replaced. Found your post while lookin for the replacement part so I thought I would try to help. Good Luck

Find the oil leak and fix it
If coming from the timing case replace the gasket.
If from rocker remove it and replace the gasket
