Starter problem on a '92 GMC Sonoma

I have a 1992 GMC Sonoma 4.3 v6. I am trying to take the starter off, I have removed the two bolts, and it won't come off. It will come part way but not completely. Is there something special that I need to do to get it off?

MAYBE THE BENDIX HAS NOT COMPLETELY RELEASED FROM THE FLYWHEEL. TRY ROCKING THE TRUCK IN GEAR UNTIL IT LETS GO. ALSO THE STONE SHIELD DOES GET IN THE WAY ON THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE MODELS. IF YOU LOOSEN THE BOLTS FOR IT, THIS MAY HELP THE NOSE OF THE STARTER TO HAVE MORE SPACE FOR REMOVAL. HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

bottom rear of engine on the passenger side, the starter is serviced from under the car. it is held to the engine block with two bolts, then u must remove the battery cable and starter solenoid wiring as well, always disconnect the battery before doing any work on the starter.

The starter in my 92 sonoma will not come out. after removing the two bolts holding it in place there is not enough clearence for it to come out of its housing

Depending on the motor there will be a sheet metal cover in between the motor and the trans. This is usually held in place by four bolts that thread into the transmission. There is also usually a couple of support braces that run from the engine to two of those bolts, again depending on the motor. Those braces and the sheet metal cover will need to be removed. The starter will then drop out.

Replacing starter for gmc sonoma

You will need to remove the motor mounts and jack up the engine and remove the passenger side tire to be able to get it out. the starter is only 2 bolts. Not hard just time consuming. Disconnect the battery before starting the process. The bolts on the starter are easily accessable you will have to raise engine to be able to get it out.

Try another starter and also try turning the crank bolt with a ratchet and socket to make sure that the crank isn't frozen in place. Do not leave the keys in the car when doing so. You don't want anyone messing around in the truck when trying that!

How hard is it to put a new starter on a 2002 Gmc Sonoma

The procedure to replace a starter is given below:
  1. Disconnect negative (black) battery cable.
  2. Jack up the Truck on stands.
  3. Remove front right tire.
  4. Access starter from wheel well.
  5. Remove cable from ignition and positive cable coming from battery.
  6. Crawl under the passengerside near the front wheel remove two bolts on the starter. pull starter out from wheel well.
  7. Installation is reverse.
  8. You can possibly do the above from underneath the vehicle, but not sure if starter will drop down.

2.2L Engine remove protective shields as needed then remove front exhaust pipe. Remove the brace from the engine to the clutch housing, then disconnect starter wiring. 4.3L Engine 2 wheel drive just remove the right front tire and you will have access to the wiring. 4.3L Engine 4 wheel drive you must remove the differential carrier shield if equipped then remove the starter bolts and rotate the starter to get access to the wiring. Good Luck.

CHANGING STARTER ON 94 SONOMA

Hi Terrie- You can go to '94 GMC Somoma Repair' and there are numerous sites. But I think you have to remove the 4 prong wire (may have to wait for entire unit before removing red lead?) and crossmember (only 4 bolts?) and/or then loosen 1 bolt then remove other-thenstand it up and turn around before you slide out and down. Not that big-o-deal but it helps to know before you go in(you can call |GMC and ask Service Dept. Good luck and God bless

Starter motor

It's easy, 2 9/16 bolts, remember to disconnect battery and make a note of the wiring on the starter.
