Question about 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

1 Answer

Vibration in front end and popping noise

I have replaced the intermediate steering shaft(via service bulltin) and the tires have been balanced more than once. the vibration comes in about 60 to 65 mph and then sometimes not at all. Could this be tie rods or rack and pinion. the truck has 65,000 miles on it. The popping is when you are backing up with the wheels turned and sometimes pulling foward with the wheels turned.

Check your u-joints in your front axles. It sounds like it is time to replace them.

Welcome to FixYa, a place where people can help other people. The following are things you ought to know:

    1. The Avalanche, including 2004, does have available four-wheel drive.

    2. Askers, such as yourself in this case, do not always provide enough information. Vague questions or poorly written questions will usually be ignored because the writer usually is not going to assign the appropriate rating to someone who is offering free advice. I now am sorry that I didn't ignore you.

    3. I may have to report you to the site moderators for your incorrect rating of my post as "inappropriate". The correct thing for you to have done is to rate my post as, "Thanks for trying" or not rated it at all until you got a better answer. There is nothing inappropriate about my post and I am offended.

OK, I think I see what has happened. The moderators confirmed what you just said about answering the questions. It appears that the rating system has changed. When you marked my post as not helpful, it showed up as, "Inappropriate" on my profile. I apologize to you for the misunderstanding and I will take up the inconsistencies in the rating system with the moderators.

no not typically. Have you checked out the tires closely for any signs of tread separation on the tires? That could be associated with the vibration above 55.

Front end makes popping sound when turn a corner

If you are feeling this through steering wheel more pronounced at lower speeds it is known problem with intermediate steering shaft. If your feeling it in floor boards maybe issue with engine cradle mounts.

2005 Equinox has vibration through the steering wheel at 65 miles per hour.

check condition of front tire, also the balance of the fronts 65 is a common speed for tire vibration. do not overlook steering play(tie rods, ball joints) also bent wheel. any noise? could have wheel bearing issue. lots of places, like vip, pepboys, etc. will check front end for free hopeing to sell you a part. not bad deal because you do need "something" even if it is tires balanced.

Hello, I see you may a lot of changes and replaced a lot of parts. We leased an Explorer the same Year as yours. In our case there was a slight noise as well as vibration. The problem was the Front Hub bearings, They were bad at 18000 miles.

There are a few things I want to suggest. The spinning of the wheels on the lift will not load the bearings. A Dyno table can get everything turning with a load on it. As your vehicle is a 4x4, most Dyno's were 2 wheelers. You would have to call to find one for a 4x4.

Next, if the new Hubs do not help, have a look at the rotors. They are also balanced. You can spin balance the Wheel and rotor as a unit with a floor motor. It's not the best way to Balance because tire rotation or even shifting the Wheel on the lugs will UNbalance it. But this method CAN pinpoint a problem if a Balanced tire does not spin true when bolted to the vehicle. You will know the Rotor is off-balance and which axle is causing the problem.

Would be interested to see a Post of what you found.
