Do I need a check engine light on to pull codes?

I recently had a check engine light on, I disconnected the battery, re-connected, now it is it too late to pull the codes?

Yes, it is too late to retrieve the codes. However, you're in luck. The condition that caused the check engine light to light, in the first place, did not go away when you disconnected the battery and will most likely cause the light to reappear sooner or later.

    As long as your light still works, it most likely was a true intermittent condition. To check your light, turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. The check engine light should be illuminated.

Hi there:Code 12 - Memory standby power recently lost - Possible Causes

Battery or power line recently disconnected - This code is normal if the electrical system has been worked on or the battery has recently been disconnected. It will be removed after 15 ignition switch on/off cycles.

Low system voltage, bad battery or battery terminals - If the system recently had a power drop (due to a dead battery or bad alternator), this code will appear. If the battery terminals are bad and the engine was jumped, this code will appear. See the Diagnosing Your Charging System page for more information.

Bad connection or wiring - Check the wiring and connections between the battery, power module, and logic module (or SMEC). Check all fusible links and power connectors to the battery. Clean and regrease any corroded connectors with dielectric grease and repair any shorts.

Code 32 - Logic module did not see a change in air/fuel ratio when EGR circuit was activated - Possible CausesEGR valve stuck open or closed - If the vehicle fails emmisions, then the valve may be shut. If the enigne runs poorly at low rpm or at idle, the valve may be stuck open. It may be the valve or the transducer valve. Test the transducer valve vacuum output. At idle, the transducer valve vacuum should be mostly bled, and there should be very little, if any vacuum at the output. When the engine is revved, the vacuum should increase. If the transducer is functioning properly, replace the EGR valve.

Bad EGR solenoid or Canister purge/EGR solenoid - The solenoid is located in the right, front fender next to one to three other solenoids. See the Understanding Solenoids page for information about how to test and repair solenoids.

Bad connection or wiring - Check the wiring and connections between the solenoid and the logic module (or SMEC). Clean and regrease any corroded connectors with dielectric grease and repair any shorts.

I have a 95 dodge intrepid. when i turn the key 3 times to pull the codes i get 1255 what does that mean

  • 12 is the actual code.
  • 55 Just means there are no more codes stored.

  • This code (12) means the ECU has detected low voltage and the

  • This can happen if you change the battery or just removed the cables recently to do some car work.
  1. First check all the connections to the battery.
  2. Check the battery.
  3. If both check out and you have recently just unhooked the battery then just let it be. The code is normal in these circumstances.
  4. The code will reset itself after you cycle the ignition on and off 15 times. At this point the logic module will use the default values until it relearns the engine attributes again.

My check engine light is on, what could be the problem? I recently replaced the battery w/ a brand new battery.

The check engine light is on because the engine management system has detected a fault, you need to pull the code(s) and follow that they indicate...
Battery would have little to do with the light on condition, but removal of the battery may erase codes... Find the error and attend to that.

0441 the most common fix for this code in chrysler/dodge vehicles is to replace the leak detection pump / ldp -----other areas to check would be damage / restriction in evap line / canister---faulty purge solenoid or connection damage or resistance in line -bad vacuum switch

Problem codes came up after check engine light

the1684 is letting you know battery was recently disconnected. 0340 is camshaft position circut failure.

Car will start if using a jumper cable.. but acts like theres no power to the bater when i shut it off and try to restart it... fault code flashed 12 and then 55 on the check engine light...the haynes...

Check and clean the battery connections and if the battery is dead, charge it and load test it. If the battery doesn't take a charge, one of the cells in it may be bad and it will have to be replaced. If it tests good put it back in the car and go from there. Good luck.

If the engine is running fine and you disconnected the battery recently then don't worry about it. To clear the check engine light and the code�s you can do one of two thing�s. One pull the negative battery post off the battery for 30 second�s. This clears the computer codes and the light. However it also clears your radio presets and clock. Another way is to pull the fuse labeled �Fuel Pump�. This fuse is in a box under the hood behind the battery (See photo to the left), Should be the only yellow 20AMP fuse in there. This fuse also disconnects power to the PCM "computer" as well � Kind of a secret to the general public� Just leave this fuse out for 30seconds or so. Then replace. This will keep your clock and radio presets. The engine might be a little hard to start or die the first time since the computer has to relearn everything again

12-- Battery or computer recently disconnected. Check the connections or, wiring harness that is connected to the CPU. Make sure it is in good condition. Check the battery post cables for faults as well.

55 is end of codes - it's normal. Before you call your dealer or mechanic, consider that the blink-spacing is not always perfectly uniform, so if you see 23 23, it's probably just a single 55. (Codes are not repeated.)

Service engine soon light

You need to have the vehicle scanned or pull the code out with a code reader,and address/fix the code.If you do not repair the problem,you can clear the code,but the service engine light will come right back on.To clear the code,you can disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for at least 20 minutes,then reconnect the battery,but the car is going to be hard to get to idle,because sometimes the computer has to relearn how to idle the engine without stalling.Good luck.
