Question about Suzuki Esteem

Lets see.I have a 1999 Suzuki Esteem WagonGL 1.8L with 114,000mi.When I start up the car cold and run,it runs pretty good with proper acceleration.But when it warms up with stop and go traffic,it has a tendency to want to cut off or spudder.The tach would show when that happens around 700-900rpms.I recently had a tune-up/fuel system cleaned,fuel injectors.Replaced spark plugs and pcv.Had Throttle body/Throttle plate and ICV cleaned.Still runs funny.One mechanic said it was throttle body and mas sensor.Another says fuel pressure system malfunctioning.Never had fuel pump/fuel filter and strainer replaced.Like to narrow this down a bit.Thanks for any help.K

The MAF sensor would cause irratic idle.
You can try to clean it with MAF sensor aerosol cleaner - but 99% of the time that does not work - and the MAF sensor will have to be replaces anyway.

J18 engine. FWD. application. USA setup
with COP coils x4 (DIS ignition?)
our Esteems started in 1999....
other countries have them too, but use totally different spark (distributor) and Im not answering for THAT, only USA EPA spec. engines.
some othere countries, has a Mazda. 1.8L BP.
answering for J18 only.
the J18 is an understoked, J20. (early engine)

the answer is there, too.
facing engine, crank pulley on left
see that head, see the front cam,
this cam has the CMP drive (left side,) or right facing engine) the cam drives it directly.
so... is just there.

why? not scan the PCM and see if you have P0340 errors = CMP misfiring..... (even 1 in 10)
and the prev. post has the real diagram....

I have an esteem 1999 2 injectors aren't getting electricity from the ecu spark plugs are all hot w 3-4 inj. working properly but why would this happen


Don't know. Either a malfunction internally in the ecu, or bad wires from ecu to injectors. You could pull off the ecu connector and check for continuity on the wires from ecu to the two injectors. If the power.wires are not broken and show low resistance, check both ground wires from the two injectors to ecu for continuity. If the wires are good, it must be the ecu.

Replace rear brakes on a 1999 suzuki esteem


the esteem has drum brakes on the rear and there are not any specal tools needed you can do the job with just a good pear of pliers and a jack and lug wrench, just a little advice remove only one side at a time that way if you forget were all the little parts go you can look at the other side for part location.....good luck

I have a 1999 Suzuki Esteem 1.6 and Its squealing when I start the car, I was wondering if it was either the accessory belt or the timing belt? or is it the tensioner? thanks.


change the belt. it is probably time anyways. I like the GoodYear Gaterback belt. While the belt is off you can run the car for a minute. If the noise is from the timing belt you would hear it(unlikely though). Install belt and let it run for a few minutes. Turn off and check for proper tension. Replace tensioner as a last resort. Enjoy the quiet.

1999 suzuki esteem hard to start, just cranks and cranks. Runs perfect once started. Has new spark plugs oxygen sensor and cleaned injectors. Anybody know what problem is?


check to make sure the fuel pump,injectors and fuel pressure regulator don't have any internal leaks check the fuel pressure immediatlly after it is shut off and two hours later there should be at most a very slight difference

Carbon build up on pistons raises engine compression.This is normal.Go up one grade on gas and/or put some fuel additive.If this doesnt solve it,have timing belt/chain inspected may need replaced

Your car has a warning light for the alternator,for one.and most of your garages will test your alternator for free if you are their customer.If your alternator is working properly the alternator light on the dash will light when you start the car and then go out all the while the motor is running.

Sounds like you need a fuel pump. If its the original with114,000 miles then replace it.

Suzuki Baleno (esteem) 1999. Engine Idle RPM not stable


you probably need to check the butterfly. its the compinent that controls how much air goes into the engine if it is weared than in idle state air leaks into the engine sometime more sometimes less and cause fluctuations in rpm

secondly there is a rpm switch which controls the rpm you can replace that switch and check
