Removing manual window handle at door panel

In order to check out the door lock mechanism, (door handle outside stuck in locked position, but inside latch works OK) I need to know how to get the door panel off, and the stumbling block is how to release/remove the manual window crank handle. There are no set screws visible.

Uses a "c" clip to secure window handle. Requires a special clip removal tool, that can be purchased at the parts store. Hope this helps

Better yet get a sock, or a strong piece of cloth, lay it flat under the window handle, work it back in forth (like when flossing your teeth) and try to get iy under the lip thats flat on the the door panel, once you get it under the ridge, pull it up on bothends ywist bothe ends of cloth around so you can grab it firmly, and work outward with pulling movements...should pop off ez-ily if done right, for stubbarn one just keeping working the cloth behind it back and forth pulling away from the panel as you do so.......Some times the best tools are always at your disposal :)

Cannot open rear drivers side door from outside or inside. door panel is off, door is closed. child lock is on. tried pulling cable, wont move. tried lifting up the child lock with a thin blade

Sounds like the lock mechanism is stuck on the locked position. Since you didn't specify make and model this is a best guess. Make sure the lock is in the unlock position and try manipulating the rod connected to the outside handle (since child lock is on the inside handle won't work)

I would confer with your Jag dealer on this one. Removing the door panel with the door closed is a real problem and they may have an easy fix without risking damaging anything. From what you say it sounds like the normal door release mechanism is not engaged but that the lock is. All I can suggest is to wind the window down and to do a combination waggling the 'half cocked' internal release handle back and forth whilst at the same time physically unlocking the door lock and/or using the central locking fob; press the door into the door jam at the same time to take pressure off the frame catch.

Both door locks do not work properly. I can only open the drivers side door from the inside. And the passengers side door will not open at all. This is on a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport.

Do any of the door handles inside or out feel sloppy (when you pull on them does it feel like there is nothing connected to them)?

If so that the levers on the latches are probably rusted up and sticking. Say for example the outside door handle lever that is attached to the door latch is stuck half way in the open position it will not allow the door lock mechanism to lock or unlock. The door will still latch and stay closed because the lever will not be stuck far enough to release the latch mechanism from hold on to the striker.

I have had pretty good luck removing the door latch (the part that actually holds the door closed) and soaking in penetrating lube and working all the levers until they move freely.

As far as the door that doesn't open I suspect it is stuck in the lock position and one of the handle mechanisms is in the partial up position. Again the symptom would be a sloppy door handle. That lever will need to be put back in its normal resting position before the door can be unlocked. This can be done with a slim jim. Once you have the door panel apart on the door that still opens you will be able to see the parts you need to move. You can then use that knowledge to move those parts on the other door that doesn't open.

If you don't have any experience with a lockout kit (i suspect most people do not) that that's the best way I can describe how you can do this yourself.

Hi.
Heat will not help and can damage the door lock mechanism further.
You can try lubing the door lock, but I do not thing it will help. I think there may be something wrong with the mechanism, or you will get the same problem from outside and inside.
If the door is opening from the inside , then the door lock mechanism My still be working. On VW the outer handle is connected to the lock by a steel wire, or by a metal shaft.
To access the door lock you need to remove the internal door panel. The door panel is held by hidden screws located on handles and by a set of clips located behind the panel near to the panel border.
I have service manual for several VW models, I will see if I can find the manual for 1995-1997 Passat and I will eventually send the diagrams to undo the door and access the lock.

Is your car door set up to override the lock mechanism if the door handle is pulled?

If it is not set to override, is your door still locked when you use the handle?

If the door is unlocked, is your door latch in the open position when you test the handle?

If open, close the door latch (not the door, just the latch) and pull the handle to see if this releases.

If it doesn't, check to see if all the rods connecting to the latch mechanism and the handles are all in working order

hi deleon,

on your door, if you remove the panel from the inside, you should see a lever connected to the handle that is supposed to disengaged the door hinge opening the door.

your may have this part broken due to corrosion, or there is a possibility that the lock did not disengage leaving the lever connect to the door handle not disengaging the door hinge.

have this checked with a local mechanic or consult the service manual for DIY.

if you have other questions, just lemme know.

voodoo

Lock mechanism in my doors is broke

the rod inside the door has come off this happens often, most of the time its because the srcew holding the inside door handle is loose try tightening it first, if this does't work remove the inside door handle held on with a t15 or t 20 scew and see if the rod has come off at the handle try pulling on the rods to unlock the door then open it, once the door is open remove door panel 2 screws at bottom and just pry up on the soft upper grommets if it a half door reomve door panel and plastic moisture barrier rods connect from the outside lock cylinder to the lock mech and rods also go from the inside lock to the mech one or both of these has come off reconnect them sometime the clips to hold them in place fall down into the bottom of the door if they are not on the rods look there..hope this helps
