1992 Ford Festiva-Engine cutting out

My son's 92 Festiva is cutting out on level ground & on hills. He can put the pedal all the way down and it will either go really fast, or cut out. No problems starting etc. It has an automatic transmission. He had driven it about 40 miles when it started cutting out, parked it at work. It sat for about 8 hours. After work, he hobbled it about 10 miles before just parking it.He said that when it cut out and he put the pedal down, the engine did NOT rev-up, it just idled.

We have a friend/mechanic looking at it and is going to come & drive it & let us know. He thinks it is also in the fuel system. It is frustrating to put time & money into a car just trying to figure out what is wrong. We did that with our 91 Honda civic. But it's worth it in the end to have it back on the road.

I have a 92 ford explorer and the red brake light cuts on with medium braking and under heavy braking the yellow rabs light cuts on as well any idea whats wrong?

this may sound silly but have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder? They do have a level sensor in there and will cause your symptom, more so under braking or heavy accel, also the e-brake pedal switch can cause this, if the pedal is falling under heavy braking the switch could illuminate the light, then the abs light will come on if vehicle still sees e-brake is on and the is still a speed signal recieved by the abs.

'92 Ford Festiva stalls when overheats

it sounds like your radiator fan is not working. once your engine reaches a certan temp. the fan should come on to cool it down. also might be the thermostat is not opening. it is not good for the motor at all to over heat and stall. you could ruin your engine. i would change thermostat first and then run it till it starts getting hot to see if the fan kicks on. if it doesn't, it could be the coolant sensor or the fan itself. good luck.

Ford festiva 93 model wa

i gather that you are keeping the transmision selector handle in the Drive position.
qturn the car around and go up the hill again but this time set the selector on 2 and see if it works better.
then try it in drive position again but at a slow speed,,the trans should stay in a lower gear and pull easily.
This will tell you if the trans is shifting properly or not.

And no i doubt very much if it is the filter since you dont mention any problems on a level roadbed.
