Rearview mirror fell off windshield! Not broken...

The rear view mirror just FELL OFF my windshield while in traffic today. nothing is broken, it looks like it should slide and lock into place somehow, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have a diagram or can walk me through how to fix this? Would greatly appreciate it. Cannot afford to take it to get fixed. There are 2 small sliding black pieces and then the mirror...the thing to hold it onto the windshield is still there and not broken. I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy. Please help :)

So I need to take the mirror holder thingy off of the windshield, attach the mirror to it, and then re-attach entire thing to the windshield? I have the mirror off now, there are 2 sliding black pieces that should fit into there somewhere? nothing is broken. it just slid off and now I can't figure out how to slide it back on? i dont see any screws on mirror.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

There are NO SCREWS in the mirror! What are these 2 black plastic thingys and where do they fit in? The mirror won't simply slide or click on...these 2 black plastic pieces have to fit in somewhere? I wish I could take a picture...

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

I dont know where to put the 2 black pieces - on the mirror or on the mount? the mount and the mirror are completely apart. I undid the wires that went into the back of the mirror so it wouldnt hang down while I drove home. Now I'm just baffled as to how this happened and where each part goes?! The 2 blk pieces are what's throwing me off.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

There are 2 black plastic pieces - they have Y shaped arms on one side of each one. they fit one inside the other. I am thinking they have to go to the back of the mirror and then it all somehow fits back into the mount... there is a "hole" on the blk plastic pieces, but they fit one inside the other, if that makes sense?

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

So I DO need to take the mount off to fix this problem?

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

2 plastic "thingys" (2 black thingys)

back of mirror (back of mirror)

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

I jst posted 2 pics, but guess it wouldn't let them show? is there a way I can post pics? no, neither of them looks like mine.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

Here is the windshield - the cord to the left is what plugs into back of mirror. the little thing is the mirror mount.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

@ blueextc3221 I appreciate all ur help and patience. now that you have pics of everything, any clue as to what i can or should do? i am so pissed...ugh!

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

so i DO need to remove mount from windshield? unscrew it?

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

they appear to be adhesive, but if those blk thingys sit on top of them, i dont see how?

what is headliner? i'm sorry...i'm a chick. all i do is put gas in, get oil changed and drive. this is complicated for me.

so the blk thingys go into the mirror, and then it should just slide onto mount? i dont have to move or touch the mount at all?

where do the blk pieces go - on the mount or on the back of the mirror?

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

you have to slide the mirror mount over the top of the windshield mount it shoud be pretty tight fit.

press flat against the window and slide down

WITH THE BLACK PLASTIC PIECES JUST SITTING BEHIND MIRROR? SHOULD THE BLACK PIECES INtERLOCK SOMEWHERE? the diagram was good but still confused...

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

    THANK YOU!!!!!!

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

and the mount of the back of the mirror is not glued to windshield, it's on a pivot ball like thing on the back of the mirror, affixed to the mirror.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

I'm gonna wait on the other pics...lol. thank u 4 being so patient...u certainly are a GURU. This is so frustrating...i feel like the black thingys must be there and need to be in there somehow, i just dont knw how or where?! UGH.

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

YES YES YES! I thought A & B were supposed to be BEHIND the mirror on the mount somehow, LOL. THANKS SO MUCH! GENIUS!

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

THANK U THANK U THANK U...I so need a mechanic in my life, lol! You've been GREAT. Kudos genius...

  • c_dot May 22, 2009

The mirror should simply slide over the metal mount (button) that is glued to the window.

loosen the set screw on the mirror mount...

hold the rear view mirror mount on the glass just above the metal mount (wide end of plastic opening facing down)

slide it into place...
secure it by tightening down set screw you loosened earlier.

that would be the best thing to do - as industry standard mount involves mounting the metal button to the window - and then using a set screw to tighten in place to the button.

is there a hole in the black plastic piece?

this fits just like this picture i posted...

The left plastic pice from your headliner....

the right plastic piece from that one to the 2 locking tabs on the mirror mount.

the black piece on the windshield has to come off the button

that is what locks the mirror in place once you slide it on

  • blueextc3221
    blueextc3221 May 22, 2009

i believe the piece that is still on the windshield is supposed to be permanently glued to the above pic too.

those 2 white dots just under the red circle are adhesive?

  • blueextc3221
    blueextc3221 May 22, 2009

i dont see any screws in the pic LOL

    its too dark.

if there are screws - its meant to stay there - as there is no way to tighten once mirror is in place.

you have to slide the mirror mount over the top of the windshield mount it shoud be pretty tight fit.

press flat against the window and slide down

mount the mirror to the glass mount first (yellow)

    then put piece b on

slide a up into b and then back down - locking into the tabs circled in red.

all the while keeping the wire behind those trim pieces :D

I need to remove the metal holder that is glued to the new windshield I had installed. The new metal holder is wider than the original, and I have no idea how to remove its hold from the glass. Any solutions?

If you look on the mirror you should see a small set screw by were the mirror slides on to the metal button that is on the windshield you have to loosen the set screw and slide the mirror back on to the button and then tighten the set screw again.

windshield's are made of laminated glass so they shatter into tiny pieces when in an accident so do not cut as bad , the rearview mirror has pulled the first layer of laminate away , the windshield will be weakened by this and could shatter at any time , particulary over rough/bumpy ground, it cannot be repaired so you will need to replace the shield , as for who designed the mirror he wasn't very clever !

The inside rear view mirror fell off I need to re=attach it

The button is locked into the mirror shoe by a flat spring. Find the notch at the bottom of the shoe and insert a small flat screwdriver to push the spring away from the button. Some force may be required.

Cavalier convertible rearview mirror fell off

there is a screw that holds that piece of metal in place. take the screw out and remove the piece of metal then look at a local hardware or automotive store and ask for the windshield adhesive. and fallow that instructions pay close attention to the temperature to be applied at and the Harding or drying time.
