Doesn't sound like an Idle problem to me. Sounds more like a timing issue,probably has some slack in the timing chain based on its age so even with new plugs it needs a timing adjustment.
you bring the 1 notch and or timing arrow lines together facing each other on the flywheel and timing mark,then check the #1 piston for being as far up as it will travel before going back down,then install your timing chain and you should be ready to go
