The thermostat should be closed when you take it out, therefore the thermostat is bad. It does not closed.

1. I would in the first place try to isolate this problem to a faulty thermostat and /or wrong fitment.

2. Get a new thermostat that is the correct spec for the vehicle. If you don't know check with the dealer.

3. Make sure you are positioning the thermo correctly in its seat and when connecting everything back up there is nothing impeding coolant flow like a poorly fitted gasket.

4. Importantly make sure that when connecting the cooling system back up and after topping it up with the correct coolant you purge the cooling system of air. If you do not do this the vehicle will overheat and potential engine damage will result.
Many vehicles have bleeder screws in place to bleed out air from the cooling system. Consult the workshop manual for the vehicle for advice on the correct procedure for bleeding air from your cooling system.

Water leak under the intake manifold,1995 toyota 4 runner

There is a heater core bypass pipe that runs from the block (under the manifold) to the bacl of theengine where you will see a flat rectangular "sheet metal" thing with a pipe coming out of it. The a rubber hose connects. You need to pull the top air plenums and intake to get to it. The p[ipe flange bolts to the block with silicone rtv as a sealant.

1995 Toyota 4Runner 3.0 V-6 overheated

If there is no visable water drip, or puddle, then it sounds like a head gasket could be the problem as they are aluminum engines. I used a block sealer from the auto parts store and solved my proble. It was called block seal, and has copper in it. Cost - $8.00, but you will also need anti-freeze and a flush kit, as you have to remove all the water and anti-freeze for the stuff to work. Hope this helps, can't hurt. Good luck.

Overheating

Is this the diesel model ? or petrol power? Never lug your diesel engine it will overheat even a new engine. Check your coolant level when engine is cooled down it may need burped. Why the head gasket change? did the head get checked for cracks and surface flatness, could be still leaking combustion pressure gases into the coolant have a test for this
