The air conditioner starts out cool then becomes extremly hot
If the electrical cooling fan for the AC condensor is operating, I'd just try adding a can of R134 to your system.
It isn't costly and it may have just fallen too far to be effective.
The coolant molecules are so small, hardly any system remains tight enough over the 8-9 years you have used the car to avoid some losses.
If the fan isn't operating, you need to find out if the fan motor is at fault or a relay isn't turning the fan on with the AC.
