Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
How hard is it to replace side bearings in a 1998 grand cherokee fonr differential
Not physically difficult but, depending upon how adjustment of ring gear is made (shim or screw in/out collar) you may have a problem. If yours has a shim pack adjustment, just remember how many shims are on each side and put them back exactly as they came out. If you have screw in collar,(looks like a ring with holesd in it with a lock tab sticking into one hole to keep it from turning) you need to know how to set pre-load and depth adjustment or the gears will destroy themselves after you are finished. Generally if you have not done this before, it's better to watch someone with real experience do it, so you can learn. Also, if side bearings are bad, chances are that pinion bearings have been contaminated and are not in great shape either. Otherwise it can get really expensive. You usually can find good used "drum to drum" axles in most scrapyards...but you need to match the gear ratio to what you have EXACTLY.
