they said the computer showed them that the hoses need to be cleaned or replaced, the plugs are bad, filters need to be changed and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced and they can do all of this for about $300.

thanks, I am not a mechanic, but I thought about the only thing to do was plugs, wires, and filter. I'll give this a go and see how it works...thanks

About all you can do is change plugs and wires, and they don't do much more than that. What converter are they talking about?

Well, i don't know how the computer knows that the hoses are dirty, or even which hoses we're talking about, but i can tell you if it was my car, i would change the plugs, plug wires and air filter. Change the oil and drive it. If the converter is giving problems, change it, i guess. But if it runs fine, i wouldn't worry about it. And you know once they get it in there it's gonna end up 600 bucks.

Good for you. Let me know how you make out. PS- you might as well spend money on tools for yourself, as give it to the mechanic.

Try going to a higher grade of fuel, and give it a good tune up (wires, plugs, oil change) if that dose not work, it is your catalytic converter. It needs to be replaced.

1997 Mercury Grand Marquis is backfiring alot. Why? What do I need to do to fix it? Is it bad to drive my car in this condition?

If it is backfiring, you will cause major and expensive problems by driving it.You should get a good tune up done, replacing plugs, air filter, change oil, new plug wires, and do all of this if it is determined that you still have good compression in all cylinders-a tune up will be pointless if there is a major internal problem, but if you still have good compression, so do not waste time, get this done. At the very least, you may still end up replacing the catalytic converter, not cheap.

What causes my 2001 grand am gt1 to overheat

Well, before a positive for sure answer can be given, a few questions need to be answered to aid in the diagnosis... 1.)when was your last tune up? 2.) When did your car first start over heating,(ie) did it happen all of a sudden or slowly over time (meaning days, months)? 3.)How many miles does your car have on it? 4.) Have you noticed a small or large puddle under your vehicle lately? 5.) have you had your fluids checked lately? 6.) have you had your smog equipment, 02 sensors, converter, exhaust, etc. checked at its regular interval? All of these questions are important and I probably forgot a few that any normal mechanic would ask but these are the ones that I could trust in to give you a good answer.

My cars acceleration is bad

I dont have a clear answer for you but i hope this helps. Most acceleration problems are caused by low fuel pressure. I dont know what your car has had for maintenance but i would start with a tune up. You may have something as simple as a plugged fuel filter or something major like low compression. I know thats a big window but truth is without a little diagnosis of the fuel system or a compression test its tough to tell you exactly why you have bad acceleration. If you take this car in make sure you tell them why you are bringing it in. I have had customers ask for a tune up only to find out they really have a starting problem and they think a tune up will fix it. The more information a mechanic gets the better diagnosis you will get. Good Luck!

Got p0742 stating torque converter clutch circuit stuck on. car stalls sometimes and power steering shuts off on turns. can you assist?

either the torque converter needs to be replaced or the computer that send the signal to the torque converter has failed. I'm afraid more diagnosis is required.

In the past four month I have replaced catalic converters twice on the left and once on the right...need help thanks

This is a ENGINE PERFORMANCE Problem, The Check Light Should Come on and Lead to the DIAGNOSIS of the Problem, Most Likely a Poor AIR / FUEL Mixture Problem that Melts the Cat/Converter. A Major TUNE UP is in Order here ALSO if it has not been Done Yet.

1997 Mercury Grand Marquis check engine light came on took it to AutoZone they said # 1 cylinder miss-firing now light is flashing is this a serious problem please help?

If you don't address it, it will be more serious as in burnt valves, burnt up converter, possibly more engine damage. Get it repaired. Probably needs just a tune up, but needs to be checked to be sure.

You need to have a proper diagnosis done by a computer. Then when you get the error code look for it on google. You will know exactly what is wrong and what needs changing.

Have the converter checked at your local muffler shop. The check is not expensive and could save your engine. I work at a GM dealer and we see some failures of the converters.

I just had the same problem. Check the catalytic converter. It took me forever to get over 30 or 40. Drove everyone in the road nuts. They initially thought it was the transmission. Not so, clogged catalytic converter. I got it tuned up and the engine runs fine. Wish I could sasy that about everything else on this lemon!
