thanks! do you know where i could find step by step mapping or a free repair manual? it seems like the space around the alternator is very tight. i see how i would have to room to unbolt the piece.. but then taking it out looks like a problem within the problem

The steps are:
disconnect the negative battery cable
remove the large plug from the alternator by pushing down on the plug latch and, pulling out
next remove the nut holding the large wire to the case (under the rubber boot)
unbolt the alternator and, remove

Battery wont charge, battery/ABS/SRS/BRAKE lights come on while driving and flicker. voltage increases to dash lights/fan speed/headlights periodically.

Get a volt meter, start your car and see how many volts your car is producing while running. Should be around 14 volts. May want to watch the meter for a while since your electric seems to fluctuate. Most voltage regulators are internal of your alternator. If you are getting a lot more or less than 14 volts while running, replace the alternator. If it is not charging, voltage will drop as vehicle runs, until battery is dead.

How to connect a new era alternator voltage regulator wiring diagram.Or a schematic diagram of the charging system.

knowing the color codes can be a great help..usually in 12v reg system, from the regulator there are 6 white wire having a stripe codes, blue means neutral, green means field, black means ground to body, white means hot wired to +12v,yellow means to bat charging indicator going to instrument panel and finally red means to ignition....and always secure the regulators case to ground.

I seem to have a charging of the battery problem. I would get 14 volts to my battery from my alternator and then 6 volts, i changed m alternator and things were going great, no problems. Now it is acting...

Hi,
If you were originally having a wild fluctuation in measurement at the battery the voltage regulator would have been shot. I'm not sure of what the condition was of the original alternator. But I would definitely have changed the voltage regulator. A bad regulator can ruin a battery and all sorts of other things. If you are now getting wild variations in voltage
1st Purchase and install a new voltage regulator. (probably about $20.00 these days.
Then check your new battery by doing the following:
1 Disconnect it from the truck's electrical system.
2 Charge it up using another vehicle and jumpers.
3 After disconnecting the battery from the jumpers, let it sit for a few minutes.
4 Check the voltage. If it is below 12 volts, the battery is shot. Replace it under warranty.
5 When you get the new battery, Install it in the truck and start it up. Then measure the voltages coming into the battery from the alternator and the new voltage regulator.
If all is well, your done.
If not. Pull the alternator and replace that.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck,
Mark

Brand new battery, drove car about two days and the lights got very dim, stereo turned off,no accellaration, and now dead.(1994 mitsubishi mirage 1.8 liter)

It sounds like the battery has gone dead and will need to be replaced due to a bad Alternator. Once you get the car started, check the voltage on the battery, there should be 13.5 to 14.5 Volts. A fully charges battery should have 12 volts with the engine not running and once the engine is running there should be 13.5 Volts with the head lights on and heater on too. If there is less then 12 volts reading on the battery with the engine running, then replace the Alternator. You can pick up a Alternator at Auto Zone and they can give you the step by step instructions to replacing it with common tools and they can also check the Alternator in your car to before you buy the new one. Good luck and hope this helps and insect the wire harness from the battery to the Alternator, look for any sighs of damaged like corrosion and repair any damages to the wire harness.

Would the voltage regulator prevent my passat from starting?

it shouldn't. the voltage regulator is located either internally on the alternator or on the outside of the alternator. it controls how much voltage is delivered from the alternator to the battery, 12-14 at idle and up to 16 ish when revving. i have never heard of a voltage regulator preventing a vehicle from starting unless the voltage regulator malfunctioned and the car got something like 20Volts. then maybe that would have an effect...
hope that helps...sort of....dead batteries also prevent vehicles from starting.....something to look at i guess

low voltage pulling by what your saying it sounds like your alternator is about to give up seeing that it cant disperse elec. to other units so its draining off the battery

change out the voltage regulator they didnt change your alternator they just rebuilt it or did nothing it sounds like

voltage regulator = adjusts the voltage
some are built on the alternator and is replaced at once with new alternator
others look like a little fin like an amp usually black in color this you will see bolted on the fender right or left this is a voltage regulator

somtimes you get a bad alternator in box when it can be new this is a chance chance cause now most parts are remand.
i still believe its your alternator you either of several things
got ripped off
got a bad alternator in replacement or
you got a bad voltage regulator by itself
looks like this
