1987 mercury cougar overheating 5.0

I recently bought a 1987 mercury cougar and did some modifications to it. I put some headers on it new ignition system new intake gaskets top and bottom and i have put new rod and main bearings in the bottom end. But i still cannot keep it from overheating. I have put an aftermarket electric fan on it replaced the thermostat twice and the water pump once. This all started once i got my a/c charged and started using it here lately. the car never really had a good heater either if that helps. I need your help?

No, it doesn't die out and I haven't flushed the system out yet. All I'm running is water in it so far, but when it gets hot steam pours out of the radiator so the temperature sensor can't be bad and the electris fan is wired into my fusebox so it's on all the time. So I don't know why it would still be overheating. I'm going to try to flush the system out tonight. Thank for the comments and help and if you have any other suggestions feel free to let me know.

I changed the radiator cap because the one that was on it looked like the factory one and filled it with antifreeze instead of water and it hasn't overheated on me yet and I went driving around all last night. Thanks to everyone who helped me fix this, I appreciated all the help.

If you're running just water, that could be part of the problem. Water heats easier than antifreeze.

Is your radiator core blocked or the grill resticted?

Does the car shut off when it over heats? Did you flush the block out? If the car shuts off when it over heats then its either your after market electric fan is not kicking on or it's not pulling enough air through the radiator to cool it. Also check to make sure you have enough antifreeze in it. One other thing would be if the car does not die out its your temp sensor on the motor is not reading temperature right. Just recheck fluid levels start the car and watch to see if the electric fan kicks on it's something simple. A/C really does not affect temperature that much.

I have a 1997 mercury cougar xr7, 4.6L, I noticed the last couple days while driving that somtimes (not all the time) when I step on the gas to accelerate it feels like the engine is really hesitating,...

Yes it can be related. If you bought the car from a car lot you may have a window sticker showing a 30 to 90 day warranty. The Catalytic converter can be expensive although it is similar to installing a muffler or header extensions.

The hesitation can be due to the engine controls trying to adjust for the difference in exhaust readings from one side to the other. Or it has excessive backpressure caused by the plugged catalytic converter.

1993 Mercury Cougar XR-7 V-6, Overheating

Your problem could be the coolant temp sensor, or it could be the gauge itself, but something 2 do is if you can get it to a dealer, or a parts store. If you cant get it there, you can get an OBD I scanner and retrieve the code and know why the check engine light is on, but it could be from any of the sensors on the car, would be best to get it scanned.

put the test light on the positive of the battery and probe the neg side of the coil while cranking and see if you get a flashing lamp if not either the ignition module is bad or the pick up inside the distributor if the car has a tach if the tach moves while cranking it is most likely the module
