YOU HAVE AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM. YOUR POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IS THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE. SCAN THE SYSTEM FOR CODES AND GO FROM THERE.

Please be sure to replace your power steering pump because it has gone bad and it might stop work totally causing more damage to your steering rack.

Cheers.

There is a recall on the power steering just call any GM place and tell the that you have a recall and would like to have it fixed and it won't cost you a dime!

2006 Chevy Cobalt. My power steering goes out.

It sounds like the power steering motor is overheating pre maturely. Changing the motor should take care of the problem. What really happens is the motor reports to the power steering module that it is over heating and the module is shutting power to the motor down, the motor is actually no overheating.

2005 cobalt stalling out

If the power steering is tight and does not loosen up,i would say the power steering pump is locked up.With the engine not running ,remove the drive belt from the engine.Try and turn the power steering pulley with your hand.It should be easy to turn,turn it 4 or 5 times all the way around.If you can not move the pulley,or it stops,or gets tight turning it all the way around,then it is a bad power steering pump.This is something you will want a mechanic to do.If I can help,let me know.

Power steering goes out

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles;
2005 model year Pontiac Pursuit; 2005-2006 model year Pontiac G4; 2006 model year Pontiac G5 Pursuit; and 2007-2010 model year Pontiac G5
vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at
any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a "Power Steering" message will be displayed in the
Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode.
If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver
compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash.
