How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?

SOURCE: Location of Alternator relay in 1987 Nissan

I am assuming that when you say no alt light on dash , you mean that when you first turn key on for the bulb check it won't light. i f this is true then I would be looking at replacing the bulb first. most car's use the bulb in the dash as part of the excitment circut to get the alt to start charging.

Low voltage

Clean all connections and make sure they are sound on both the battery and alternator. Electricity does not like to flow properly through dirty and poor connections.

If your alternator is not pushing charge at over +13V(sometimes over 14V, all depends) when the engine is running, then it is faulty. Take it back to where you bought it from and exchange for another.

If the alternator is fine whilst running and the battery shows 9V when the engine is stopped, then your battery is not holding the charge and is faulty. Take it back, same as if the alternator were faulty.

By rights, all things being equal, once started, your engine should run without the battery being connected at all, if your alternator is operating correctly. Your battery is only a storage device to initiate engine ignition. They are rated by CCA, which is simply crank power to turn the engine over and start.

1988 Nissan 300ZX, Installed a second new battery, but car still shuts down, when headlights are in use--alternator or some other part?

Might be...
Your battery is just to get the car started, then the alternator supplies the power to run all electrical and keep the battery charged up. If the alternator fails, it will drain any battery to nothing. You will need a volt meter to test it. Normally a battery has around 13 volts with the car not running, (DC) and when it's running you should get an increase in voltage. If you have less, your alternator is not working.

Car wont start after replacing alternator and battery is new what could be wrong?

alternator has nothing to do with a car starting. All it does is charges the battery. If the battery is good and charged then you most likely left a sensor unhooked or you did not disconnect the battery to replace the alternator and popped a fuse or possilby damaged a computer if a short occured.

Put on new alternator still wont charge

if the alternator still does not charge the battery then you probably are looking at a bad battery. Also the cables could be bad, bad voltage regulator, loose belt, or the ignition exciter wire is faulty/loose/disconnected.

All idiot lights came on. Won't hold a charge for long.

chk charging noltage at battery posts. should be in 13.6 to14.2.. Is charging good at 13.8. If thar's good, your battery is not.. Your alternator won't last too long with a bad battery. good luck

Charging system

I had this car about 10 years ago. Loved it!

You must either clean or replace the battery cable. The corrosion is not allowing the charge to get to the battery.

Many parts houses carry a battery post/terminal cleaner that will aid in getting all of the crud away from the terminal.

You should be sure to remove all of the corrosion!

Good luck

No dashboard lights or windshield wipers.

I had the same problemon my 87 model z. If you are looking at the front of the car THe battery Should be one the left. Just below the battery there is a little black box with some diferent colored wires in it. The one closest the the front of the car(SHOULD BE GREEN) is called a fusible link. You cant tell if its melted by the naked eye most likely, but if you pull on that wire i guarantee that its burnt. Touch the two burnt ends back together and vialah, everything cuts back on. Make sure your battery wasnt installed backwards. That was the reason mine blew.
