SOURCE: I need the diagram for

The Sorento has a timing BELT not a chain. Here is an image of the 3.5 litre engine & the timing marks. Note: special tools are required to hold the camshaft sprockets in place when belt is installed to prevent any movement....I hope this helps.

When to replace timing chain on toyota rav4

Broad opinion is the chain is good for 200,000 or the life of the engine. The big problem is the life of a chain is so variable depending on maintenance and driving conditions.

A car with fewer cold starts and longer journeys driven mostly at a constant speed that has had regular oil changes using quality oil will have a considerably longer timing chain life than a car that has lots of cold starts, short runs and minimal maintenance.

Mostly a worn chain will rattle at idle for a while before it breaks and causes damage. When servicing a chain driven engine it is often possible to get a look at the chain through the oil filler. If not it is worthwhile to occasionally remove the valve cover and expose the chain and check it for wear where it passes over the sprockets.

With a worn chain it will be possible to detect some slackness where it passes over a sprocket even though the chain seems tight between the sprockets. This condition indicates the ideal time to change the chain, tensioner and guides for the purpose of preventative maintenance, though typically a chain will last a lot longer but then when the chain must eventually be replaced the sprockets are likely to need replacing in addition to avoid a prematurely worn (replacement) chain.

Timing chain has a lot of slack and is rubbing against internal case. question can existing chain be tightened or must be replaced completely

The timing chain keeps the major componants in the engine alligned. A new chain will allign the engine componants better than an old chain that is sagging... and will thusly make the engine perform better and get better fuel milage as well as last longer.

I would replace the chain and not even consider the tightening of a chain that is that worn out...

You are lucky not to have the chain skip and cause the valves to come into contact with the pistons... ( read ; Interference engine)

At what mileage does the timing chain need to be replaced? jeep wrangler 2008,3.8 L 6 cil.80,000 miles

You change the timing chain now when your Jeep has indicated from a check engine light on. The timing chain in engines these days last as long as the engine will, there is a timing chain tensioner to ensure there is no slack.
When the timing chain has gotten stretched to much, your Jeeps PCM will indicate that with a check engine light on your dash and will be indicated with a DTC codes from a scanner.
So no worries about replacing your timing chain and keep up the regular maintenance, if you have a Mechanic tell you other wise, there just looking for money and your looking for more then just a timing chain being replaced.
You can bet that chain, chain tensioner, timing gears, water pump and might even throw in a cam replacement will be in his recommendation.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

How to replace a timing chain 2000 chevy cavalier

I am familiar with that vehicle but generally with timing chain replacement, the engine needs full access for pulley and cover removal and in some cases the cylinder head requires removal.
Generally timing chains last so that they only need replacement at engine overhaul and it is not an economic proposition to have to replace a chain unless some relative degree of engine work is also required at that time.

Engine timing chains generally have a tensioner on them which maintains tension, but some chains can wear significantly and cause timing cover to be "ground away" because of "slop".

If the engine is making the noisy rattle of the timing chain against the cover etc, I would schedule a top overhaul (head, machine, test and valve grind) with the chain replacement dependent on mileage with the degree of action.

Some simple simplex timing chains (type of chain similar to motor bike chain) may be replaced without dismantling the engines but I would expect your chain would be a "duplex" dual sprocket type, these are most common.
These chains are not generally expensive but replacing them can involve a fair amount of work.

Good Luck and hope this helps, Others will have different ideas.

Do timimg chains need to be replaced (not a belt)?

Timing chains do need to be replaced but they can typically go much longer between being serviced than can timing belts. The chain will stretch out over time and can 'jump' timing. If you have an interference engine then that can prove disastrous as the piston can crash into the valves.

Its not terribly common for a timing chain to jump timing but not impossible. I have a vehicle with nearly 120k with a timing chain and its never been replaced and is still in good shape, I have another vehicle with 170k also with a timing chain that has never been replaced.

If it were me and I was going to be doing some work in that area and had easy enough access to the timing chain, and the mileage was getting up there, I would replace it. Timing chains typically also have a tensioner, so if you replace it, dont forget this item.
