Turn wipers to off then turn the car off. We have the same problem in our 1986 Pontiac parisienne brougham

Back windshield wiper won't turn on

The rear wiper has a dedicated fuse. It's the 10A R/WIPER fuse in the relay block. This supplies power to the rear wiper and washer switch and the rear wiper control unit. That unit also gets power from the 20A AUDIO (!) fuse in the engine room fuse box. If the fuses are OK, the ignition switch is in the ON position, and the rear wiper and washer switch is turned on the rear wiper should work. If not check all the components described to find where the loss of power is occurring

Have you replaced only the motor or including the gear box (where the input shaft to the linkages is located)?

First check the wiper fuse then check the relay by turning wipers to on position and listen for the relay to click if it clicks its good.If they are good then turn the ignition and wiper switches on and check for 12 volts at the wiper motor. If you 12 volts then the wiper motor is faulty.Replace motor.

After installing a new battery in my '97 Saturn SL, my wipers come on automatically when I start the car, and they won't shut off until I pull the fuse out. When running, they go only at one speed,...

well if you look on www.youtube.com there is a nice guy who has some saturn repair videos. one of them is how to troubleshoot the wiper switch, part of the multifunction device under the steering wheel. this is done from the wiper motor connections so you are going to have to pull the wiper motor out to get at the connections. while you have it out replace it in case it turns out the switch is good. your problem it is one of the two parts and saturns had a long history of short lived wiper motors.
