What is the correct thermostat temp for 5.7 vortex motor it looks as it is not coming up to temp ?

Maybe it loading up the converter with unburned fuel? o2 sensor going bad im told 4 their is 4 sensors.1996 gmc yukon 1500 5.7 w/miles

Bank 2 will the the passenger side or right side and sensor 2 is the O2 sensor behind the catalytic converter.

The code P0420 indicates that the catalytic converter is not functioning efficiently. This could be because the cat is damaged or the engine is not running very well and the cat cannot keep up with the emissions. You should ensure that the spark plugs and ignition components are in top shape before replacing anything else. If a compression check reveals a low cylinder, you will not be able to prevent this code as even a new cat cannot keep up with a dead miss. If the state of tune and the compression is good, then you'll likely need a cat.

I've posted the drive cycle just so you know what to do when you have resolved the code.

  1. Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F (50°C) and within 11°F (6°C) of the ambient air temperature at startup.
    Do not leave the key in prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.
  2. Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire, and - if closed loop is achieved- Fuel Trim.
  3. Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 55mph (88km/hr) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.
  4. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  5. Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph (32km/hr). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  6. Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph (88-96 km/hr). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.
  7. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.
  8. Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.

Yes it could be your convertor when the convertor breaks inside it breaks chunk and those chunk bloke the exhaust so no power

While driving i noticed steam coming from under the hood, so i immediately pulled over and turned the car off and the motor was bubbling. I let the motor cool off and then checked the fluid level and it...

Thermostat needs to be replaced. Refill the coolant after the engine is completely cool. If its still hot the coolant will expand and make it look like the radiator is full. Temp light won't always come on for a thermostat issue.

Thats a science question without more details.
Usually, hydrocarbons is the unburned fuel that comes out the tail pipe. So the closer to 100% of the fuel gets burned, the better. If your car is not passing a test, there are several possible causes, including a faulty thermostat or catalytic converter.

Car went over temp after about 30 minutes of driving. What could this be?

check for correct fluid level first of all in the radiator,, if the fluid level is fine, you may have a stuck thermostat,, or a fan relay thats not turning the fan on at the desired temp, , start the vehicle and look for a couple of things,, 1 remove the radiator cap prior to starting the motor, ( make sure before you do this that the motor has cooled down) let the motor run so it will warm up,, 2 things to look for,, fluid movement in the radiator once it heats up,, you can look into the radiator cap opening to see this happen, and 2 watch for the fan to come on, If you have ac ,,and a single motor,, leave the ac off, if you have 2 fans on the vehicle, turn the ac on , check to see if that fan started, if so turn that one off , if the fan comes on once heated enough,, the fans are ok, if you see movement in the fluids in the radiator, then the thermostat should be ok, They are cheap and easy to change, so if your not sure, Just replace that part

Coolant fan not working on my convertable, how do I replace the fan thermostat?

The fan on that vehicle is turned on by the engine computor. There are also at least two, maybe three relays for the cooling fans, and they are marked on the lid of the underhood fuse block. The fan thermostat you are looking for is the engine coolant temperature sensor. If your temp gauge is reading correctly, this is probably not your problem. Also when temps sensors go bad, the engine usually runs very poorly. These vehicles did have durability problems with the cooling fan motors themselves.

1996 chevy s10 4.3 vortex lifters knocking at start up but goes away after 10 minutes idling. changed oil and filter oil pump reads 58-60psi at idle and seems to be working.

High milage? Try engine cleaner, run for couple hundred miles and then use an additive like Restore. If it's just dirt this may help. Make sure you are using the correct viscosity oil for winter temps. If it's from wear only parts replacement will fix it.

usually when the heat is turned on and temp goes down it means you probably have a bad head gasket leading to the high temp the only way to do this is to have an compression test to see if your heads are leaking.of you did radiator you also did thermostat,and make sure your engine cooling fans are workingto check this just look at your engine while parked let the motor warm up and see if they go on maybe the auto switch on cooling fans are no good

The temp gauge on my 2003 chevy impala is pegged hot when idling, but goes down as I drive. Is this a thermostat problem?

The most probable cause is air in the system. If all fans kick on then it can only be air in the system or problem would accure when driving too. A pocket of air will cause a small vortex and it take far more pressure to get anything around it. Like fluid. To burp the system....when your car is cooled off, remove the radiator cap and then start it will push all the air out the top and you will see bubbles and maybe even some fluid shoot out. Just make sure you add back to correct levels when all done. This running process has taken me as long as 30 mins to get all the way out. Its easy and free but DO keep an eye on the temp guage while the cars just idealing to get the air out.
