Poor acceleration on 850 GLT 5-speed

My car has been having poor acceleration due to a lack of power after about 3k RPM. I regularly use Carb & Choke cleaner to fix the problem but its only a temporary fix. any suggestions on whats wrong? Im thinking either O2 sensor or Mass Air Flow sensor

I have also been getting poor fuel economy. I used to get about 25 and now I get below 20

  • blondetamadr May 22, 2009

yea I tried to clean the O2 sensor and I think i loosened some junk in it and now my car wont idle. im gonna check the voltage with my voltometer tomorrow morning and look for a bad wire. where is the air flow meter located?

  • blondetamadr May 22, 2009

yea Im pretty sure tha my car was running rich. it makes sense considering I was getting horrible MPG and I had a lack of power.

  • blondetamadr May 22, 2009

I pulled the codes for my car and I came up with this:

512 - short term fuel mixture too rich
121 - Mass Airflow Sensor absent or faulty
223 - Idle air control valve absent or faulty
113 - short term fuel mixture too weak

    suggestions?

Check the voltage output on the o2 sensor and the wires and plugs.the air flow meter or the coolant temperature sensor could also be an issue.

the air flow meter is on the hose that goes from the air filter to the throttle body.it is a square block with a multi wire connector on it.

an open o2 sensor will make the car run very rich and most likely set off the check engine light.

there is a motorized valve called an idle airspeed controller.if it is jammed,it will lean out the air and the car will not idle.

a haynes manual is an excellent investment.they are not alot, and has the wiring diagram and component location

Poor acceleration

Check your spark plugs.

Tip

Loss in engine power, sluggish responses, low top speed, etc.

If your car has
  1. Poor fuel responses
  2. Lost its "power"
  3. Low RPM
  4. Lower top speed
  5. Burns a lot of fuel
Then it could be because of carbon build-ups in your engine's combustion chamber. This is left behind with unburned fuel. It causes poor acceleration, a loss in power, lower top speed, and burns more fuel than it really has too. Not to mention causes smoke belching.

The best way to get rid of that would be to have a carbon ridding solution injected into the combustion chamber. The solution will liquify the carbon and other build-ups, which would then restore the "power" of your car. You'll get better acceleration, higher rpm and top speed, save fuel, etc. have a mechanic do it for you. It's alot cheaper and faster than having the engine overhauled (overhaul could trigger "loose compression").

Mazda 323 1994 sedan loose power on 4th and 5th gear topspeed is 100kph

Check the engines compression. This has been known to happen on real tierd engines that have poor compression, with it comes lack of power from the combustion cycles. If the rpm is raising quickly, and speed isn't, your clutch could be slipping.

Where is the map sensor on a 1996 volvo 850 glt

Map sensor problems are more common on certain models. As far as engine computer sensor reliability this is one of the sensors that appear to be more reliable overall. But on a few models poor mounting location chosen by the factory may reduce its reliability.

This is not what you want to hear, but its time to replace or rebuild the transmission. The clutch packs are worn causing your slipping concern. and your fluid is probably contaminated with the clutch material which can cause hydraulic circuit failure.

Pulled Codes Volvo 1995 850 Need Help

I would lean toward the MAF sensor they were known for going bad, which would cause all these codes. It wouldn't hurt to take the IAC off and spray it out with carb cleaner and some WD40, just to cover your bases. Both these units were made by Bosch and the MAF failed alot more often then the IAC.
