Transmission won't get pass 3rd gear

It sound like the gear linkage isn,t set up right, you wouldn,t always be able to engage a gear unless you rocked the car.

Unless you are low on fluid, I suspect you are in need of a rebuild. I have had similar problems before. Any shop will tell you to try a fluid and filter change. It has never brought one of mine back. I would suggest adding fluid to the top of the 'add fluid' area of the dipstick and no more. It can foam if it is to full, causing similar problems as being to low. I would add that if you have to replace the transmission - you need to consider that the car may not be worth the cost.

2002 Nissan maxima stuck in 3rd gear, auto tranny . I was driving the other day to realize the light on the dash said I was in 3rd instead of drive, but my gear shifter was in the drive position ....


Most modern day autos are all electronically controlled, Usually if it detects a fault it can go into limp mode which by default is 3rd gear. The fact your speedo is not working which too is most likely sensor driven then that may be a clue to what is wrong. No speed sensor, no speedo and the transmission control unit is not getting the vehicle speed sense either. So it has no way of knowing what gear to be in or any shift points. I'm thinking it's a sensor issue would be my best guess.

The light is flashing to alert you to the fact that the transmission control module has detected a fault in the operation of the transmission. You now need that fault ID-ed by a shop and repaired.

I guess my first question would be - are you saying it is slipping in 3rd gear ? If you push the gas pedal to the floor it should downshift into a lower gear.
If it is slipping, or not upshifting into 3rd gear, I'm afraid chances are the transmission is toast.
You can take it to a couple of shops for estimates but they will probably want to pull the pan and take a look inside.

Code p0795 gearbox fault message on dash and stuck in 3rd gear , Will not go into O/D after being driven 5 +miles / 10 minutes .


Hello i can assist you your your fault code you have supplied indicates your pressure control solenoid "C" is malfunctioning this will cause your transmission not to shift properly and will stay stuck in separate gears including 3rd gear.I recommend taking your vehicle into a transmission specialist for proper repair and transmission service this is a delicate job if you have not performed such transmission repairs.You should not be operating your vehicle with this control solenoid malfunctioning.

4l60e slips in 3rd and 4th


There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

You have a couple of choices on this Honda transmission... D and S modes. Consider the D as the normal Drive mode and the S for Sport mode. The difference between the two is that in "D", the transmission will shift through the gears all the way to 4th gear and at lower rpm shift points. In "S", the transmission will shift at higher rpm levels and will go no higher than 3rd gear and light S3 on the dash. Once the vehicle is in 3rd gear (S3) you can then press the S4 button and the transmission will go into 4th gear (when conditions dictate). I believe there is even an S4 indicator on the dash signifying the trans is in 4th gear

The last line looks like it is the key here though.

If the car thinks its in 4th gear when you are trying to start it, obviously it wouldn't start...you could probably hunt around and see if there is a sensor on the transmission stick that runs the "D" vs "S" mode
