Question about 2003 Ford ZX2

Thermostat/heating issues The service engine soon light came on last week or so, and shortly after that the temperature gauge doesn't get to the mid range and the heater doesn't work as well.

Have a shop test the service engine soon light for codes. its either low on coolant or the thermostat is sticking.

the service engine light is prob due to the oxygen sensor being damaged, not replace or you having the catalytic converter taken off---just messing with you. start at auto zone and have then do a free code read then go from there. you should troubleshoot the low fluid level switch for your brake fluid. unplug it and see if the light goes off and if it doesn't jump the two terminals on the harness. oh the car will have to be running. is the coolant flowing thru the radiator check bottom hose should be same temp as top hose if not could be clouged radiator or week water pump

I would flush the whole system with radiater flush then replace with new coolant. But make sure the heater is set to full heat when you flush it ( while driving around the block with flush in it) so the small radiater that has the hot water flowing through it gets flushed too. It may have some build up in it stopping the full flow of heated water/coolant through. If it is bad enough may need to remove and spray out the rubber hoses from the motor to the heater core, and possibly remove the heater core and hose it out to make it flow better and therefore increase the heating ability. How would I know if my thermostat is broken


If you have a temperature gauge on your dash you can read the engine coolant temperature. After overnight the gauge should be low and during about a 15 minute warm up cycle should achieve about mid range on the dash gauge. It should stabilize at this point with minimal fluctuation through out normal driving.

If you do not have a temperature gauge use an OBDII scan tool where you can read out the engine temperature as you would read the gauge.

A passenger can observe the live readout on the scanner that are equipped with such features while you operate the car.

code p0118 refers to engine coolant temperature (ETC) sensor ---circuit malfunction===causes---coolant thermostat---wiring open circuit/short to positive---wiring short to ground---ground wire defective---ECT sensor.. The temp gauge works off a temperature sender unit separate to the coolant sensor and if it is reading 100 then it indicates an overheat situation in the engine . Probably why the engine light is coming on. As the thermostat is in the list of causes I would replace it as a precaution. The coolant sensor is what tells the CPU to turn on the electric fans to cool the radiator

Dodge grand Caravan 1995 has been acting up with erratic heating since last month.


Could possibly need a new thermostat, the thermostat opens and closes depending on the heat of the coolant. maybe also check your heating core. as well as the quality of you coolant.

It does sound like a weak fuel pump but you should check fuel pressure before you condem it. You should see readings in the mid 50s to 60 psi key on engine off. The check engine light may be a separate issue. You'll need to find out what code/s are stored in the PCM. A parts store like Autozone can help you with this.

2006 A3 The interior is slow to heat. The temperature gauge reads low (at the bottom of the scale). The check engine light just came on. I bought this a3 used last week.


put your hand onto the top hose or the radiator top to feel the heat (if any)if its cool to the touch,then first change the thermostat.not forgeting to vent the system after to release any trapped air.

Changed the thermostat on a 1994 Corsica 2.2 4 cylinder because the gauge was moving from the 1/4 position to 1/2 of temperature range. What do you think could be causing this swing in temperature


Your fan coming on to cool the engine coolant is the reason it fluctuates, but the temperature sensor or gauge are only as good as their condition-in other words, the best way to determine if your fluctuations are from the sensor, gauge, thermostat or even the PCM is to use a remote temperature gauge, an infrared hand-held temperature gauge, or replace the sender, then thermostat. Doing the last two is probably the easiest and least expensive.

My 2002 xterra has started running hot..code po 217 came on..after gas cap was put on wrong..cleared code put gas cap on right then fine for 2 weeks..when idleing heat gauge rises high..as soon as i rev...


Hi Code P 0217 does point to the thermostat but it also points to the wiring, cooling system, and the temperature sensor, to check the thermostat start engine then once the temperature gauge in the car reaches normal the thermostat should open and the top hose that goes into the radiator will warm up quickly as the thermostat opens, if the thermostat is stuck in it's open position the top hose will start warming up before the engine reaches it's working temperature, hopefully i have explained it clearly,
