Question about 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Oil pressure gauge issue

My oil pressure gauge is stuck to the far right on 80. All the other gauges work fine. The oil pressure gauge does go back to the left when I turn off the engine.

Oil pressure


Remove the oil sender unit and fit a pressure gauge , start the engine and check pressure, seems odd the oil light and pressure gauge both showed a fault at the same time, perhaps the oil pump relief valve stuck open for a short time.

If my oil sending unit is out will my truck break down


yes,it reads oil pressure only,if its out as long as it was working fine before it went bye bye your fine,you won't blow up engine or break down.

even though you replaced the sender you could be having an issue with your dash, what i would do i run test gauge(it will go right where the oil sender is) and verify for sure what your oil pressure is doing, if you dont have a test gauge you can rent or get a loaner from most parts shops. once you have verified your oil pressure and its still to low you can try changing the oil weight but you risk blowing out a seal if the pressure goes above 80-90psi. plus the manufacturer recommends a certain weight for a reason, alot of guys think they know better but trust me, the engineers that designed your motor know what they are doing and have probably forgotten more about engines than most of us will ever know. so just keep that in mind when reviewing these suggestions... as far as i know you should be fine as long as your pressure doesnt get any lower than 10-15 psi. any lower than 10 and you risk doing permanent damage. you may be simply be looking at worn gear in your pump or your oil could be getting too hot. you may have a clogged oil cooler or maybe the addition of an oil cooler would help if you dont have one. i had this issue on a 5.7 i built up and as soon as i installed an oil cooler my pressure problems went away. theres a few other things that could cause this issue, but before trying any fixes or throwing parts at or changing your oil grade i would use a test gauge and verify for sure what your pressure is doing as step one. hope this helps, good luck

The oil pressure gauge is going directly from 0-80.....as soon as you crank up the vehicle....Its running fine, no lights have come on, running smooth like normal, its just that the gauge in the dashboard...


It sounds like there is a problem with the oil pressure sending circuit. The oil pressure sender changes voltage according to the differences in oil pressure. If it is pegged all the way to the max, there may be a short (or open, depending on the way the circuit is designed). I would take it to a shop and have the oil pressure tested with a mechanical gauge first, just to be sure there isn't a problem with the relief valve on the oil pump. But if the oil pressure gauge isn't working properly, you won't know if there really is a problem with the oil pressure, and that could be catastrophic to the engine.

I replaced my oil preesure sensor and my gauge


Your problem may have nothing to do with the sensor but in fact, the pressure relief in the pump may be stuck. Install a mechanical gauge on there temporarily and check the actual pressure. If normal then the gauge wire may be grounded somewhere. If it reads the same as the one on the dash then the relief is stuck (sometimes it can be freed up by draining the oil filter, filling it with marvel oil and re-starting, sometimes takes time though...otherwise you'll need to take care of the pump)

Oil pressure guage went from 40psi to 60 , 80 then pegged and stuck there


check your pressure with an external gauge if you really do have high pressure then you pressure relief valve on your pump is stuck not easy on your seals but as long as it isnt fluctuating( pumping all of your oil out of the pan before more can trickle back into it) or not over 85ish youll be fine. check for sludge of foriegn objects, it might just be stuck but it may have something stuck in it. if your gauge is wrong its probably a short, you should look for frayed wires but youll probly have to wait for something else to go before youll find it

Oil pressure gauge reads 80 psi with engine off and pegs running


That is probably a defective oil pressure gauge or a broken oil pressure sender, it reads 80 psi just because that is the maximum value allowed.

Pressure can be verified by reading it with a gauge tool.
If you really have pressure over 70 psi when engine is running then start replacing the oil filter, and check that the oil lines from pump are not obstructed, if there is nothing in there then replace oil pump.

If instead the gauge reads 80 with engine off, that is a defective pressure gauge.
