Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

Is it possible to do a BCM (body control module) test scan myself or do I need to take it to a dealer?

I would like to have my BCM tested and reset, but don't have a dealer scan tool. I don't know how much it costs to have this done and am wondering if this is something I can rent and do myself.

I hsve a 2008 saturn sky base 2.4L. The dealer says I need a new body control module. My question does the new BCM require reprogramming? If it doesn't then I will replace myself. Thanks

Body Control Module (BCM) Replacement and Reprogramming
If the BCM is replaced or requires reprogramming, the following procedures must be performed in the specified order:
BCM Setup -- Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Body Control Module. Select Setup BCM and follow the on-screen instructions, making sure to select the proper RPOs and input the VIN correctly.
BPP Sensor Calibration--Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration
Program Key Fobs--Refer to Transmitter Programming
Setup SDM Part Number in BCM -- Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Body Control Module. Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM and follow the on-screen instructions.

2003 Durango. Power windows and wipers quit working intermittently

These components are operated directly through the module commonly know as the BCM (body control module) this BCM can be scanned and run through an operational test to determine any faults it may have, you need that test done.

Where is the body control module located on a 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora.

You would need to see if any DTC'S -diagnostic trouble code's are stored in the BCM , That's the first thing that should be done . An a special type scan tool is needed , not a code reader for engine code's. If no code's ,checking power an ground circuits to the BCM need's to be done. Input an output test's have to be done as well . You need wiring diagrams , pin out diagram of BCM connectors . Need to know what all the BCM controls etc... Suggest you watch this videos . I have a 03 envoy xl and replaced the old body control module with a used on how do I reset it?

It has to be programmed for sure if it can be used at all . Most GM vehicle do not allow used BCM'S . It will lock up with out proper vin number an anti-theft system information installed . Your best bet is call the dealer or an independent mobile technician in you area that does reprogramming . If I may ask what kind of problems were you having that makes you think the BCM needed to be replaced ? Was a Professional type scan tool used to see if the BCM was able to communicate ? Were power an grounds checked ? Fuse's etc... I see it a lot working at the dealer , not just GM vehicles either . Customer changed out module when it didn't need it.
If installing a replacement BCM, program the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration .
An you need a subscription on GM web site , GM scan tool or a J-2534 Pass-through Device programming tool .
The procedures below are designed to set-up the body control module (BCM) correctly during BCM related service. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely.
Important: The following procedures must be followed:
  1. Programming the BCM
  2. Programming Theft Deterrent System Components, if equipped with Passlock System
  3. Relearn Restraints ID
If you don't understand what this guy talks about , you really need to take it to the dealer.

Auto lights won't turn off on a 2011 Chevy Traverse even after 10 minutes

Well Jeni there are a few thing's that could be wrong , the headlamp switch , the BCM -body control module -a electronic control module . There are relays involved also ,but don't think there at fault . To be sure you need to do some electrical test to know for sure ! I suggest you take it to a ASE certified repair shop that has the knowledge , tools an service info - wiring diagrams etc.. ! Oh and a scan tool that can extract DTC'S from the BCM there could be a diagnostic trouble code pointing to the problem !

5. Park Lamps Always On
When the headlamp switch is in the OFF position, the body control module (BCM) receives a ground signal through the headlamp switch OFF circuit and an open signal on the park lamp ON circuit and headlamps ON circuit. When the headlamp switch is in the PARK or HEAD position, the BCM receives an open signal through the headlamp switch OFF circuit and a ground signal through the park lamp ON circuit or headlamp ON circuit.
Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the headlamp switch.
  2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ground circuit terminal 8 and B+.
  3. ?‡'
If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Auto Hdlp. Disable Sw. parameter is Inactive.
  5. ?‡'
If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

  6. Verify the scan tool Headlamp Switch parameter is Inactive.
  7. ?‡'
If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

  8. Verify the scan tool Parklamp Switch parameter is Inactive.
  9. ?‡'
If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

  10. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the headlamp switch.
If the BCM needs to be replaced , it has to be programmed . The dealer is pretty much the only place to have that done at ! There are other places ,you have to look in the phone book or inquire at local repair shops . Some towns ,city's have mobile repair guy's that do flash programming of modules etc... Good luck hope I gave you some insight on the problem ! I tell people these thing's an it's like they don't believe me , I see they repost the same question . I started working as a Technician in 1984 at a Chevy dealer ship an have worked at Cadillac , Pontiac , GMC dealer ships ! I see all to often people trying to fix these type of problems by just replacing parts not knowing what they are doing an wasting there money an later bring it to the shop anyway ! So I hope you make a good decision an take to a qualified repair person or shop !

How to fix code u-1411

double posted? search it here, and is is all over google searches.
what engine?
as always check all fuses!!!!
use google, and read that first, then ask questions.
here i do it for you. bingo !

Implausible fuel volume signal
i love that word, Implausible ! and ECU said that. wow.

id reset the whole system
and drive 20 miles aggressively, (and hills)
see if its is real (glitch) or hard fail or intermittent.

it means its a communications error !
here is the excepts :

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)(Refer To List 1).

Theory of Operation

The BCM has to send the PCM a fuel volume signal over CAN C. The signal the BCM sends over CAN C is implausible.
{me: CAN is the comm network used on new cars}

Diagnostic Test

1. ACTIVE DTC's set (scan car)

Ignition on, engine not running.

With a scan tool read DTCs.

Is the DTC active at this time?

Yes

Go To 2

No

Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Diagnostic Procedure.

Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

Refer To List:

2. CAN C BUS DTC'S ALSO ACTIVE

With a scan tool check for DTCs in the BCM. (body puter)

Are any CAN C related DTCs active at this time?

Yes

(Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) for the appropriate diagnostic procedures.

Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST - VER 1. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/FRONT CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)

No

Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module per Service Information.

Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

got that? if not read the real FSM, or take it in.
you do or they do.....

2002 olds aurora windows, locks, mirror not working

This systems are controlled by a central body module called the BCM, it must be scan and run through an active test by the dealer to see what has happened. If the BCM is defective the replacement must be programmed to work in you car by you guessed it the dealer.

Side doors switch wont work / passager window wont open.

These power accessories are controlled by a computer module commonly called the body control module (BCM for short), the BCM has the ability to self diagnose, you need the Ford dealer to scan the BCM and make the BCM run an active self test, then the BCM will deliver back fault codes for what it Found wrong in the system while doing the active function self test. Guessing is really not an option here, parts are to expensive to just randomly replace in hopes of fixing the problem.

2006 chevy trailblazer dome light will not shut off

There is no fuse marked for dome light's in the rear fuse box. The BCM - body control module controls the dome / courtesy light's .
The body control module (BCM) monitors the courtesy lamp switch signal circuit in order to determine when the courtesy/dome lamps should be illuminated. When the BCM senses that the courtesy lamp switch signal circuit is grounded when the switch is activated, the BCM will directly illuminate the courtesy/dome lamps.
DTC B3801 Passenger Compartment Lamp Request Circuit

You should possibly think about taking your vehicle to a qualified repair shop !
Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the courtesy lamp switch parameter in the body control module (BCM) data list.
Does the scan tool display INACTIVE?
YES - Go to Step 3
NO - Go to Step 4
3
Activate the courtesy lamp switch.
With the scan tool, observe the courtesy lamp switch data parameter.
Does the courtesy lamp switch data parameter change state?

• Test the courtesy lamp switch for sticking in the ON position.
• Perform a visual inspection for loose or poor connections at all related components. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

2000 LeSabre BCM Suspect

The first thing the dealer would do is diagnostic's . Would not guess and just replace the BCM . Hooking up the factory Tech 2 scan tool an checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes , input data to the BCM etc.
(I have reason to believe the BCM in my 2000 LeSabre is bad ???? )you have no clue ! The BCM has nothing to do with gauges , insturment cluster ! Beside's you still would need to take it to the dealer because it would need to be programmed .
Leave this to a qualified repair shop . Plus the dash doesn't need to be taken apart to replace the BCM . Your vehicle actually has three modules for the body control system .
The body control system consists of 3 modules:
• The dash integration module (DIM)
• The instrument panel module (IPM)
• The rear integration module (RIM)
You have no idea what your messing with . Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop ,and that doesn't always mean you need to take it to the dealer .
Each of the 3 body control modules integrate a number of functional systems under the control of a single module. Each of the modules is connected to the Class 2 serial data line. Many control signals are implemented by Class 2 messages.
Important: The air bag indicator light may remain ON after the DIM module is replaced, and during the programming procedure for the DIM, until after the procedure is completed and the ignition key is cycled OFF and ON .
• Before replacement, record the personalization settings to transfer to the new module (if they are available).
• After replacement of the DIM, perform the following procedure.
• In order to reprogram the DIM, perform the following procedure.
Using a scan tool, preform the New VIN Procedure.
Perform the Setup SDM Serial Number in DIM Procedure.
Using the scan tool, set the Point of Sale in the DIM module to the correct country.
Using the scan tool, configure the RPO option configuration.
Perform the vehicle personalization in order to reset the owner's desired personalization settings. Refer to Instrument Cluster, Gauges and Console.
Plus power door locks and windows are controlled by door module system , not body control system .The vehicle is equipped with power door locks. Each lock actuator is powered and controlled by the door module mounted in the individual door. The driver door module (DDM) is the master control for the door lock system but the rear integration module (RIM) contains the program that determines when the lock functions are permitted.
Mess with the wrong stuff an you will render your vehicle useless
cost to much to fix.
