use a mityvac or equivalent handheld vacuum device and while running engine apply vacuum to EGR valve (disconnect line to EGR and plug first)..stumble idicates it is opening and operating one way correctly....computer controls the operation (when and duration)..so left to check is seating (spray carb cleaner around the EGR)......and computer instructing EGR at erroneous times to open (many possible reasons)..good luck and inform me/us of outcome :)

There is a VSV (vacuum switching valve) , usually mounted on the back side of engine block, under the intake manifold, as well as the map sensor, that can also cause that code if one or the other is faulty. It takes some pretty detailed troubleshooting to confirm this in some cases, so if that's not in your line of work, you may have to have it properly diagnosed, or take a 50/50 shot at which one first.

Hi,

The P0403 code represents a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Solenoid or circuit.Below is the chart that explains and directs us to where the problem may exist.

Since there are a number of components or wires that can be at fault for this code,I feel it is not going to be something that we should attempt to diagnose via long distance. You may wish to check the basic wiring and vacuum supply to the solenoid, but if you find that the ECM is at fault, you will want to have this type of problem backed up by a good part and labor warranty.
Most solenoids need about 20 ohms or slightly higher resistance on the primary winding circuits to function correctly.

  1. Using the VACUUM HOSE ROUTING as a guide, check to be sure that the vacuum hoses are correctly connected.
  2. Check the connection condition of the vacuum hoses, (removed, loose, etc.) and check to be sure that there are no bends or damage.
Be sure to clear any trouble codes after you have made any repairs to the system.

There is a very common problem with early Pacificas and several other year models of other Chrysler cars and vans that causes the codes P0032 and P0403 to set and its not due to a failing HO2S sensor or a bad EGR solenoid. It is in most cases caused by a bad ground to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) solenoid. The ground you need to check, at least on the Pacificas, is the G100 ground located on the left frame rail below the battery. Make sure its clean and tight with no signs of corrosion. They are known to break and come loose.

The causes for a P0403 EGR code could be any of the following:

  • Bad EGR solenoid
  • Excessive resistance in control circuit (PCM controlled ground) due to an open, chafing or damage to the harness
  • Poor connection at the EGR solenoid harness (worn or loose pins)
  • Water intrusion at the EGR solenoid harness
  • Blockage in EGR control solenoid holding solenoid open or closed causing excessive resistance
  • Loss of supply voltage to EGR solenoid
  • Bad PCM


How many miles/kms on the Escape? If the EGR is bad, it could be due to a plugged catalytic converter in the exhaust.

Hi there:
P0403 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction



The most common failure is the EGR solenoid goes bad. The code will not set and turn on the light until the car's computer has gotten around to completing the EGR self-test.

The P0403 indicates the computer is not seeing any voltage on the blue wire coming back from the egr solenoid.


With the ignition on and engine off, use a scan tool to activate the EGR solenoid. Listen or feel for a clicking, indicating that the solenoid is operating.

If the solenoid does operate, you'll have to check current draw on the ground circuit. It should be less than one amp. If it is then the problem is intermittent. If it isn't then there is excessive resistance in the circuit and perform the following

1. When it's activated see if you can blow lightly through it. IF you can\'t there may be a blockage causing excessive resistance. Replace EGR solenoid as needed. If there is no blockage, disconnect the EGR solenoid and the PCM connector containing the EGR solenoid control circuit. Using a digital Volt-Ohm meter (DVOM) check resistence between the control circuit and battery ground. It should be infinite. If it isn't, then there is a short to ground on the control circuit. Repair the short to ground and retest as needed.

2. If the solenoid doesn't click as it should, disconnect the EGR solenoid connector and connect a test light between the two wires. Using the scan tool, command the EGR solenoid on. The light should light up. If it does, replace the EGR solenoid. If it does not perform the following: a. Check for 12 Volts on the ignition supply voltage to the solenoid. If it isn't present, inspect the supply circuit for an open, or a short due to chafing or breakage and re-test. b. If it still doesn't operate: then manually ground the EGR solenoid control circuit. The light should light. If it does, repair open in EGR solenoid control circuit and re-test. If it doesn't, replace EGR solenoid.

P0403 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction

Causes for DTC P0403:
- Harness or connectors (EGR volume control valve circuit is open or shorted.)
- EGR volume control solenoid valve
- EGR temperature sensor and circuit

Solutions for DTC P0403:
- Repair EGR harness or connector
- Replace EGR volume control solenoid valve
- Replace EGR volume control valve


P1784 - Transmission Mechanical Failure (First and Reverse)

Causes for DTC P1784:
- Not waiting to allow transmission to engage gear before accelerating.
- Dirty fluid / clogged transmission filter

Solutions for DTC P1784:
- Allow gears to engage before acceleration
- Preform transmission service (flush & filter)

Here are possible causes for this code.

  • EGR solenoid connector is damaged (check pins for damage, and moisture)
  • EGR solenoid control circuit is open or shorted to ground
  • EGR solenoid control circuit is shorted to voltage
  • EGR solenoid has failed
  • PCM has failed
