Question about Cars & Trucks

Nissan problem hi there i have a 2005 gu st nissan patrol, single cab with coils all round and a 2inch lift kit, recently its developed terrible wheel slap in the front end, it drives fine down the road at 100k's but as soon as you hit a bump the front end and steering wheel wobble almost uncontrollably. it has a near new heavy duty tjm oil steering dampener shocker on it and all the ball joints and front end bushes seem to be acceptable.the front wheels have also been recently balanced both have about 50% tread left on them. the vehicle has barely been off road. i was wondering if you had any info on how to solve the problem. thanks. david schmidt.

This is a very typical issue on lifted vehicles being driven on the street. It is important to know that when a vehicle is lifted, the steering and suspension geometry change and characteristics will change as well.
My first concern would be with front wheel alignment. If front caster angles are too severe, the will fight each other over rough surfaces and cause the truck to wander or feel like a shake.
Also, front toe angles are crucial for proper tire wear and stability.
Have the front end aligned and checked. If there are no alignment issues, focus on the shocks and that steering stabilizer. Was the problem there before you installed the stabilizer? If not, check it for proper oil/ gas charge.
Weak or worn shocks will cause the tires to bounce and leave the road over bumps. Since the truck and been lifted, make sure the shocks are the proper length. If they are too short (even by as little as 20mm), they cause rebound problems and make the opposing side overcompensate with a bouncing effect.

SOURCE: steering vibrates over 30 mph.

I would look at changing out your bushes. do both sides as if this happend on the right you can bet your bottom dollar that the left will soon go as well. While you are at it check your shockabsorber mounts.

SOURCE: what causes the front end to jump and wobble

Hello Jake.
Seen this a few times in my shop.
Check the steering damper/stabilizer.
If the fluid has leaked out it will allow a kind of harmonic to take place and it won't stop until you slow right down.
The damper is like a shock absorber and it takes out that harmonic.
Undo one end of it and push/pull on it. if you feel any free play at all....replace it.
Get a good quality one as you know how important it is now.
This should cure your problem if all else is good.
Take care.

I have a 1999 nissan patrol gu 4.2 st ute and it out heats when i go over 100 km/ hr

Hi Damien, Did you lately have any work carried out to the valve timing assembly? If a timing belt or chain has been replaced and the timing has no been set correctly, misalignment can cause over heating. It would help to know what engine is fitted into your vehicle and if it is diesel or petrol. Regards John
