That instrument cluster was notorious for that problem due to the way the parts were surface mounted on the circuit board and they were prone to being affected by weather extremes and vibration. The problem could also be caused by the BCM (body control module), any loss of the data stream which involves the climate control, ECM, chime control module, IPC (your cluster in question), the radio and the connector by the brake pedal and possibly some other electronic components I can't recall or that may be unique to your vehicle based on options. Regarding the BCM, it has an EPROM and an EEPROM both of which are no longer available. If there is a problem with those internal IC's that's one possible source of your problem, but also the Central Power Supply located above the gas pedal could cause your problem. Regarding the data lines, this car uses a redundant data circuit and what that means is that there are two sources of data connections available to each component -originating at the BCM and returning to the BCM, with data at two connections per device. Loose or poor ground connections are also a concern as are shorts to ground of the data lines or CPS voltage or other shorts to ground. Your IPC may also simply be defective (old solder joints etc). If you're a do-it-yourselfer, I recommend purchasing the service manual readily available on Ebay. It has a green cover with a picture of a Toronado in front of a service center. That book is invaluable in learning everything possible about your car. If your IPC stays on long enough to get into diagnostic mode (through your climate control), it will help you diagnose pretty much all electrical problems in that car. I completely R

Codes for 1987 Oldsmobile Toronado

What codes? Why did you replace the crank sensor? Do you have spark at the plugs? Do you have fuel pressure? Is there a message in the dash display?

Along the left side frame rail, under the car. When you are driving the car you are basically sitting right above it.

I have an 1987 Oldsmobile Toronado and my problem is, my battery goes dead over night while parked, bought a new battery and thats not the problem. The GENERATOR light has come on once and the ELECTRICAL...

Try unpluging the field connector from the alternator after you shut it off for the night, the internal regulator may be shorted draining the power from the battery.

I have an '87 Olds Toronado and my problem is the battery goes dead over night while parked and shut off. I have had the GENERATOR light come on and also ELECTRICAL light come on. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the battery is not holding a full charge...or not being fully charged by the alternator...(may be a corroded connection) Both of these are free tests at your local parts store...if both test fine...(unlikely) the starter has to be shorting out to drain the battery overnight...Hope this helps.

All the gear indicators PRN321 on th dash of my 87 Tornado are flashing, what gives?

The gear selector switch is either out of adjustment or it is bad. Loosen the two bolts holding the gear selector in place and turn it slightly to see if the display stops flashing. You will have to manually shift the transmission lever at the switch into neutral, and then turn the switch until the display says neutral. Tighten the bolts and then check all gears. It's also possible the shift cable could also be out of adjustment. Does the display change if you simply wiggle the gear selector lever?

Dashboard goes on and off. Won't start.

Same problem on Buick Reatta and Riv's The most common problem lies in the connection at the battery, The large positive terminal often doesnt tighten provide a good constant contact one thing I found is to use a longer bolt with lock washers. The flickering of the dash is associated with this anad there may be a loose connection behind the dash itself, The electronic dashes of that era were hypersensitive to changes in the current, Make sure that all of the connections at the battery are tight. Also did you check the alternator for proper operation?
