Transfer case shift motor

4 wheel service light on. I have changed front actuator, switch and TCCM.. Dealer reflashed new TCCM and said T case is bad. Wouldn't you think I would hear a sound at least from the actuator or the T case motor??

No, if the computer doesn't detect a signal from the t case motor it wont even try to shift. the motor sometimes gets clogged with broken down aluminum. I would remove and inspect to see if it is turning freely or just replace it.

after looking at the schematics for this vehicle, I can say with great certainty that you might have something wrong in your front axle on a straight axle model that wont let the servo engage the front axle. Now if you have independant front suspension, then where the servo motor goes into the transfer case could be the problem. pull the servo motor from the case/axle and look at the engaging mechanism. You are looking for worn parts that could cause binding or broken parts. This servo motor gets its command voltage from the ecm. The signal for the ecm generates from the transmission and your in cab switch. If you can hear the motor trying to engage, then all the other factors are working up to the motor arm. The light is just a by product of the ecm trying to engage the front axle

Before changing the actuator check the vacuum lines at the vacuum switch on the left side of the transer case if they are wet with transmission fluid the the switch is bad and that will prevent 4wd from engaging.

Check the switch on the transfercase remove the vacume lines if there is oil in them the switch has to be replaced and the lines should be cleaned out you should also check under the battery tray to make sure the boot is not ripped that controls the leaver to engage the front axel

Hi my name is Juan and I do own a trailblazer with the same year 2002 and I read the problem you have let me try to help you Have you try to shift to 4hi with your transmission in neutral ? the transmission needs to be in neutral in order to shift the transfer case to 4hi and the vehicle needs to be completely stooped also is your service 4wd light on?? if the light is on your transfer case needs service and it can be as simple as the switch inside your car or a solenoid that has not been detected by the computer

The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the ignition is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module (TCCM) starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position begins flashing to inform the driver that the TCCM has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp continues to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator for the new position remains ON constantly. In the event that the TCCM can not or will not complete the shift, the indicator returns to the previously selected position; this is a Transfer Case Shift Control Switch Indicator Flashes, then Returns to Previous Mode condition.

I can here the tranfercase locking in but its not turning front tires at all ?

The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been reached (or has been engaged). If there are problems with electronic part of the systems the shift control switch light will flash warning of a problem , If no lights you have a mechanical problem in the transfer case itself .
The front axle control circuit consists of an electric motor actuator which engages and disengages the front axle. The front axle actuator motor consists of a Permanent Magnetic (PM) motor, a worm gear controlled plunger, a front axle switch and an electronic control circuit all within the actuator assembly.
The front axle actuator has four circuits connected to it, a front axle feed circuit, front axle ground circuit, front axle control circuit and a front axle switch circuit.
Whenever a shift to AUTO 4WD, 4HI, or 4LO is requested, the transfer case shift control module engages the front axle by grounding the front axle control circuit through a current limiting driver. Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
Tests the electrical function of the front axle actuator. Helps determine between mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Tests for proper power and ground at the front axle actuator.
Tests the operation of the front axle control circuit.
Helps determine if the transfer case shift control module is able to monitor the front axle switch.
Tests the front axle switch circuit for an open or high resistance.
Measures the voltage between the front axle feed circuit and ground.

Transfer Case System Description (Selectable 4WD)
The New Venture Gear Model NV243 is an electronically controlled optional transfer case for use on four wheel drive K trucks. The driver selects 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO by pushing one of three illuminating shift select buttons mounted on the instrument panel. The shift select buttons display the transfer case mode and range, self-test, diagnostic trouble codes, and electronic shift mechanical engaging problems.

Transfer Case System Description (Automatic 4WD)
The two speed Auto transfer case system utilizes a part time front axle. The system allows the driver to select the transfer case position with a touch of a button. The following positions can be selected: 4-wheel drive high range (4H), All Wheel Drive (AUTO), 2 Wheel Drive high range (2H), Neutral (N), and 4-Wheel Drive low range (4L).
The Auto Transfer Case (ATC) Control Module controls all the shifting action of the transfer case based on input from the driver as well as information from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) /Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
4WD (4H or 4L) mode: This is accomplished by engaging the front axle, applying PWM to an electric motor to apply maximum torque, (fully compressing the transfer case clutch plates) to the front axle, then removing the ground on circuit 1569, thus locking the motor in position and stop the PWM to the motor.
AUTO mode: When in this mode of operation, the system should engage the front axle, then it monitors the front and rear propshaft speeds for any speed differences. When the system senses rear wheel slip, a difference of propshaft speed between front and rear, the Auto Transfer Case (ATC) Control Module will use pulse width modulation (PWM) to drive an electric motor. This motor transfers only the required torque to the front wheels to gain additional traction on slippery surfaces up to 75 mph. There is no torque applied to the front wheels until the module senses rear wheel slip.
Throttle anticipation (only operational when in AUTO mode): If the vehicle is below 5 mph and the accelerator is pressed quickly beyond a set point, the system will automatically transfer a percentage of torque to the front wheels to help prevent the rear wheels from slipping, as in a hard acceleration from a stopped position.
The Auto Transfer Case (ATC) Control Module also has the capability of engaging the front axle while the vehicle is in motion. It does this by applying PWM to the electric motor to apply torque to the front axle, this action is used to match the speed of the front and rear propshafts. After the module senses the proper speed, it then supplies a ground on circuit 1570 to engage the front axle.
The Auto Transfer Case (ATC) Control Module will accept a mode shift only when the engine is running and a valid Motor/Encoder signal is present. A mode shift is any shift between 2H, 4H, and AUTO.
The Auto Transfer Case (ATC) Control Module will permit a range shift only if the following conditions are met within 30 seconds of the request:

A Scan Tool reads and displays the following information:
• Diagnostic Trouble code(s)
• Code status bit (are codes set or not)
• Transfer case lock status
• Lamp in the switch/lamp assembly
• Motor/Encoder gear position

• Front axle switch (open/closed)

Check the transfer case shift control module for DTC's. The transfer case shift control module is not a class 2 device. DTC's are displayed on the transfer case shift control switch. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying .

This information can be retrieved from the transfer case shift control module by way of flash codes, which are displayed on the three transfer case shift control switch buttons. These buttons are located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel Before obtaining DTCs, perform the following transfer case control module (TCCM) Self-Test.
TCCM Self-Test
Observe the transfer case shift control switch indicators while turning the ignition switch to RUN. A properly operating system will flash all indicators and then will return to the current gear. If the system is operating normally, then proceed to Displaying Codes.
If the TCCM failed the Self-Test, then test the following circuits.
• Battery Positive Voltage (40 and 1640), and Ignition 3 Voltage for battery voltage
• Ground Circuit for ground
• Diagnostic enable circuit for an open or high resistance

The New Venture Gear Model NV233 is an electronically controlled optional transfer case for use on four wheel drive T trucks. The driver selects 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO by pushing one of three illuminating shift select buttons mounted on the instrument panel. The shift select buttons display the transfer case mode and range, self-test, diagnostic trouble codes, and electronic shift mechanical engaging problems.
During normal driving the transfer case is in the 2HI mode. When the transfer case is in the 2HI mode. When the transfer case is in 2HI both the 4HI and 4LO switch circuits are open, and both lights are OFF. When the four-wheel drive shift select button has been pressed, the four-wheel drive indicator lamp under the sift select button turns ON when the front axle has engaged. The shift select button will blink while the front axle is engaging. This is a normal condition.
The shifting of the transfer case is performed by a motor/encoder that receives drive signals from the transfer case control module (TCCM). When the driver selects one of the transfer case shift select buttons, request signals are sent to the TCCM. If the correct input signals exists, the TCCM will send drive voltages to the motor/encoder. The motor/encoder will position the transfer case to the ordered shift position.

Transfer Case Control Module Description
The TCCM performs the following functions:
• Receives input signals
• Processes the signal information
• Develops output signals
• Sends the output signal in order to control the shifting of the transfer case
The TCCM receives input signals from the following sources:
• The transfer case shift select buttons
• The NSBU switch on the vehicles with automatic transmissions
• The clutch position switch on the vehicles with manual transmissions
• The vehicle sped sensor calibrator module
• The encoder/motor range and the mode feedback signals
• The diagnostic enable
• The front axle mechanical status signal
In order to ensure the electronic shift system is operating properly, the transfer case control module (TCCM) continually performs diagnostics checks on itself and other parts of the electronic shift system when the ignition switch is in the run position. The following are different types of system checks that the TCCM continually performs.
Data Memory Retention Check
The TCCM checks the stored diagnostic trouble code memory to see if the memory has changed since the ignition switch was last positioned to OFF. This self test checks in order to see if the RAM standby power supply has been interrupted. If the TCCM detects a RAM standby power supply interruption, (the loss of stored diagnostic trouble code) the TCCM stores a DTC of 1 indicating RAM standby power failure.
This condition occurs when the TCCM is disconnected from the wiring harness or battery power is removed. The DTC of 1 automatically clears from the TCCM after cycling the ignition switch ON and OFF five times.

Before replacing parts you should test the system !

Is the 4WD fuse # 15 -10 amp located in the I/P fuse box good ?

04 Trailblazer LS won't go into 4WD. Front hubs don't engage with switch in cab. It will gear down to 4wd Lo but front wheels won't engage. Please help. Can't afford the dealer!


What do the lights on the 4x4 selector switch do when you switch to A4WD or $HI or 4LO positions? Do they blink and revert to previous selection? Has the Transfer Case fluid been changed at 50K intervals?
There are actuators on the Transfer Case and Front Differential that control the application of power to the front wheels. These actuators are controlled by the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module). It takes a qualified 4 wheel drive technician to diagnose these systems.

Four-wheel drive not working. No light on swtich. New transfer case motor. Checked the fuses and the four-wheel drive switch. What can it be?


Was the transfer case fluid changed every 50K miles? This very important on these trucks. The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) could be at fault, especially since you have no lights on the selector switch. Is the Service 4x4 light on? When you switch from 2H to any of the 4 wheel drive selections, do you hear any actuator noises coming from under the truck?

My 2000 gmc jimmy 4x4 stoped working. It wont go into 4 hi. the vacume pump under the battery is good. can hear and feel the motor switch from 4 low to 2 hi. any ideas? Is there a code reader for this...


Hi, it sounds like your front diff engages but your transfer case is not. raise one of your front tires off the ground and see if it will lock up when you go to 4hi. If it does then the problem is your encoder motor that hangs down under your transfer case.

4x4 push button is not working about how much does


This is something you can do yourself if you have ever worked on a vehicle before. The part you need is called a front drive actuator valve. It costs about $ 50.00, GM part # 15165891.
Here is some more infor about it:

Main 4wd Components:
TCCM
- Transfer Case Control Module - Located behind the glove box. This is the electronic 'brains' behind the shifting.
Switch - The push button switch in the dash - driver input/indicator.
Encoder Motor - Located on the transfer case - This is what actually shifts the transfer case, and tells the TCCM what position it is in.
Vacuum Switch - Also located on the transfer case - This is what sends vacuum to the vacuum actuator (see below) when the transfer care is in 4HI or 4LO.
Vacuum Actuator - Located under the battery tray - This is what engages or disengages the front driveshaft.
Front Axle Switch - Located on the front axle - This is what tells the TCCM when the front axle is engaged.

2003 blazer will not come out of 4 lo, auto will flash when pressed and then go out


Check the fuse to your 4wd at the fuse panel at the end of the dash drivers side. If the fuse is good, put the transmission in neutral and listen for the Transfer case encoder motor to work when you push the button on the dash for 4wd hi then to 2wd. If you do not hear it working, inspect the wire harness at the Encoder motor to make sure there not damaged in anyway due to corrosion or disconnected.
Here's some info on how the 4wd system operates on newer Blazers for all those searching for the cause of the flashing dash switch light and no engagement.

4WD System Operation on 98 up (2nd Generation) Blazers/Jimmies

The front drive shaft always turns on “shift on the fly” systems so the drive train is at the same speed in the front as the rear or the whole thing would break when engaging 4Hi or Autotrac when moving. InstaTrac (NV243 case or NP1) has 3 buttons. AutoTrac (NV246 case or NP8) has 4 buttons and clutch packs in the transfer case and is the only system for on pavement driving! Prior were the NV231 (87-93) lever and NP233 (94-97) electric motor. Your VIN # is the only sure way the dealer can get correct parts/listings!
1. Select mode on dash switch
2. Signal goes to the Transfer case control module (TCCM) or computer located in the cab on the passenger side behind the kick panel.
3. If you want 4 Lo the TCCM commands the encoder motor on the transfer case to switch a lower gear in (requires putting the shifter in Neutral and be stopped or only going 2-3mph). Note that if 4 Hi selected no action done in the transfer case. The transfer case is chain coupled and has the low and high gear. You can put all systems into Neutral by pushing the 2Hi and 4Lo button at the same time when the key is in the run position (or running but not off or acc).
4. The left front (drivers side) CV axle is always engaged to the front differential, but the right side is not coupled in 2wd. There is an actuator located under the battery tray that when commanded is vacuum actuated and pulls a cable from it to the right side CV axle coupler engaging that axle. A sensor is on that axle that tells the TCCM the axle position.
5. On 99up there is an additional vacuum switch on the firewall that switches the vacuum on and signals the TCCM also.
6. The dash light on the selector switch flashes while all this is occurring and will not switch out of 2wd unless all parts report correctly – same on the switch to any mode or back to 2wd.

So, there are a lot of possible failure areas with actuators/computer/motor/sensors/vac hoses and a special scanner is required to read the codes when the Service 4WD light comes on. But, a few things can easily be done before going to the dealer.
1. Check all vacuum hoses from the intake to the drivers side reservoir can, then to the extra switch (99up) and down to the under battery actuator. Small hose is 5/32 and larger is 7/32”.
2. See if the actuator pulls the front axle cable to engage it. If not and all hoses are good the diaphragm may be leaking on the actuator. If it engages but the light is still flashing remove the indicator switch on the front axle (only electrical plug in there) and manually push it in with the connector plugged in and see if the light stops, if so replace.
3. Listen to the encoder motor clunk when 4 Lo selected. If not working look at the wiring going to it for any cuts/breaks and repair if any found. Another indicator switch on top of this case. The fluid in the AutoTrac case should be the newer light blue Autotrak –II synthetic P/N 12378508 ($7 qt) not the red Dexron III.
4. If the light keeps flashing after this then disconnect the battery for 30 minutes for a TCCM reset, just make sure you turn off your radio first.
5. Still not working – take it to the dealer and stop at the bank on the way for $$$$!

12577412 is the part number for the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM), or you can do the Salvage Yard for $15.00 if that's the part that has gone bad.
