SOURCE: 1990 jeep wrangler rear end "bang" noise then jeep would move,

I had the same thing happen. Your rear drive shaft u-jount is bad. Also wnat to check the level of gear oil...

Replacing the u-joint takes about an hour to do... not a tough job.

SOURCE: 2005 JEEP LIBERTY When the

Its probably some wiring problem. Does anyone have a problem with the swicth not caming on or going off. Questioned about one 2005 because was disengaging what I thought to be rough compared to what I was used to. They told me that I should shift the vehicle into Neutral before shifting the selector. I have also found that shifting between Reverse and Drive a couple of times while stopped has helped as well. By doing these couple of things, I have had no trouble since. I hope this helps as it might at least be something to try.

Engage four wheel drive Jeep Liberty
To engage four wheel drive pull up on the handle in the center console with the letters, 2H, 4H, N, 4L. One notch will put it in 4H - four wheel drive, high - which will be good for almost all off road or slippery conditions. Just leave the regular transmission in Drive, unless you really know what you are doing. Normally, you will never need to use 4L - four wheel low -except under very extreme conditions. If you do, you are not supposed to go over 25 mph because it will over rev the engine.
If you are going in snow with four wheel, high - 4H - you will get where you want to go. Remember though, if you are on ice or it is very slippery it will not help you stop. Many accidents happen to people who are over confident while driving in four wheel drive.

Also, supposedly, you can shift from four wheel to two wheel or vice versa from a stop or moving. BUT, the transmission is not synchronized so if you are stopped and the handle is very hard to pull, start moving frontwards or backwards, slowly, THEN shift it into four wheel drive (or back to two wheel drive).

They used to say you shouldn't go over 45 mph in four wheel drive, but they don't anymore. Let's face it, you really shouldn't be going even that fast if you are on an icy road or one that is very slippery with snow.

Some say you shouldn't use 4WD unless you are stuck somewhere. That's OK I guess as long as there is someone else around to help you if you are REALLY stuck. As for me, if it starts looking tricky, I shift into 4H!

Last but not least, DO NOT drive in 4WD on smooth pavement. At the least you will wear the tires down and possilby break stuff in the transmission because this kind of 4WD is not intended for smooth pavement.

I think your transfer case position sensor got loose. Here is a drawing of the thing, them also, could check this image:

Banging noise when you drive

This is a hard problem to describe, I know, and I will toss out a few possibilities. If the noise occurs when the car is accelerating, it can be motor mounts, or carriage mounts on front-wheel drive vehicles. Transmissions can bang into gear. Drive shaft u-joints can bang before they fail. C-V joints in front wheel or 4 wheel drive units can bang when worn out.

The exhaust system can break loose and bang on the frame. Brake calipers can rock in their mounts and transmit sound. Tie-rod ends can make a knocking noise on every bump you hit. There were recalls on gas tank straps for some Ford made units, so a loose gas tank can bang.

Loud banging noise right front wheel. shimmies ,can't drive over 25mph

I agree with the axle CV joint choice.
Could also be a brake or wheel bearing failure, but the CV joint is the most likely given the symptoms.

Check the transfer case motor that engauges the front differential into 4wd.Sounds like this motor might be faulty or sticking.

2004 Jeep Liberty Noise/Problem

if you are driving on hard surface ( sealed roads) in 4wd then don't as if damages the drive train
what is happening is that there is a torque wind up from the front and rear wheels running at different distances and the cluck you hear is when at some point that torque is released and allows the selection to disengage or engage
4wd is for use in slipper conditions unless you have an AWD which will become 4WD when required by you after selection of the control
