Question about Dodge Ram 1500

2 Answers

Po 171, po 305, po 441

My 97 ram 1500 5.9l threw a po 441 code which mysteriously went away but the engine light stayed on. Checked again (using an ABD II scanner each time) this time I had 2 codes po 171 and po 305. I know what the codes mean but before I spend money I don't have, is there any way to narrow down the problem? Any idea why the po 441 "disappeared" to be replaced by these other 2 codes?

It has to do with the first code po 441 which is a emission control device, purge solenoid, evap. canister, gas cap, etc. The new codes are a cause and effect from the original code. I would change the gas cap and clear the codes using a scan tool, drive it and see if they come back. 90% chance it's the gas cap good luck.

Hi, I know from my past experiances the spark plug wires at the boot ends than slide onto the sparkplugs usually over time short out due to the metal tubes that protect the sparkplugs from heat kind of ark across from the metal tube through the plug boot causing an error code. Sometimes in the dark you can actually see them arking at the tube on the engine, and also hear a crackling noise. As to the code for the O2 sensor that's a normal wear and tear item that may need replaced. As all vehicle age over time electrical connections, and things have issues develop and cause havick with sensors and computers in these vehicles too.

As with the 441 code and then the other code for the O2 sensor showing up may mean both O2 sensors are going bad if your system has 2 sensors in the exhaust, usually one before the cat converter and one behind it. A lot of this also is due to what gasoline you use in the vehicle over time. Lower octane gas may be what is causing things to act up.

SOURCE: P0401. P0133, P1131- emmision test

Based on what the tech manuals say I would change the DPFE sensor for the EGR Valve, careful not to tear the special silicone rubber hoses that go to it from the exhaust, as a Ford dealer tech I saw these codes allot, and the DPFE sensor was almost always the issue or the hoses going to it.

Transmission related. if shifting o.k. try erasing & see if they come back, if they do, get transmission checked . Better to check sooner than later on a transmission related problem, otherwise could cost big $. Don't be afraid of second opinion if not happy with first diagnosis.

The leak in your evap system is very small at .020. It is more than likely a small split in a hose somewhere. The cap is probably ok, we rarely find a bad one. If it is a small split in a hose it will only get larger over time. Here is the factory info on the code. We have found that alot of these leaks are from a small hose on the evap canister under the vehicle, but with out looking at your vehicle it is hard to say. If the leak goes away or is no longer large enough to be detected, your light will go out after a few days. These leaks are emmissions related and will not effect the integrity of the vehicle. I would have it checked and corrected if the light stays on at your convienience.

Symptom List:
P0442-EVAP LEAK MONITOR MEDIUM (0.040) LEAK DETECTED
P0455-EVAP LEAK MONITOR LARGE LEAK DETECTED
P0456-EVAP LEAK MONITOR SMALL (.020) LEAK DETECTED
Test Note: All symptoms listed above are diagnosed using the same tests.
The title for the tests will be P0442-EVAP LEAK MONITOR
MEDIUM (0.040) LEAK DETECTED.
When Monitored and Set Condition:
P0442-EVAP LEAK MONITOR MEDIUM (0.040) LEAK DETECTED
When Monitored: Immediately after a cold start, with battery/ambient temperature
between 40° F and 90° F and coolant temperature within 10° F of battery/ambient.
Set Condition: If there is a leak larger than 0.0409 and smaller than 0.0809 in the
evaporative system.
P0455-EVAP LEAK MONITOR LARGE LEAK DETECTED
When Monitored: Immediately after a cold start, with battery/ambient temperature
between 40° F and 90° F and coolant temperature within 10° F of battery/ambient.
Set Condition: There is a leak larger than 0.0809 in the evaporative system.
P0456-EVAP LEAK MONITOR SMALL (.020) LEAK DETECTED
When Monitored: Immediately after a cold start, with battery/ambient temperature
between 40° F and 90° F and coolant temperature within 10° F of battery/ambient.
Set Condition: There is a leak larger than 0.0209 and smaller than 0.0409 in the
evaporative system.

Upstream and Downstream Oxygen Sensors

Well, I would get a second opinion.
You now know the sensors were not the problem before, and still aren't.
It is possible the PCM is faulty, but it could also be a fuel problem.

I can get you the descriptions for the codes, but the short answer is sensor number 2 bank 2 heater is not working, and the other three are reading too much fuel in the exhaust gas.
The sensors need to be at operating temp as soon as possible, so they have electric heaters to heat them up in the first 5 minutes of engine run time. The heater is not working in one sensor and all of them are telling the computer the engine is too rich.
The rich fuel problem could be a faulty coolant thermostat, or fuel pressure problem with the injectors.
Again, I would get a second opinion.

The light came on after I drove about 5 miles. Went off after a few more. Came on the next day after 3 miles and stayed on all the way to my destination. 2000 taurus 3.0 6 cyl running fine. PO 723 gear 4...

It sounds to me that your 4th gear is just starting to slip. It will gradually get worse until you are forced to overhaul the transmission.

My recommendations:

Clear the codes and drive the vehicle while at the same time, putting some money away so you will have the funds for an overhaul. It may do like this for a few weeks or several months, but it is well on its way,,,

Until yesterday, I have never had a serious mechanical issues with my 2006 Envoy Denali, which only has +/-60K Miles (under extended 100K Mile warranty).

Yesterday, however, while taking an interstate on-ramp (I think I hit 40 MPH tops?), my 5.3L V-8 engine shut down while in use. I immediately pulled over, as my power steering went out when the vehicle shut off, and coasted to a stop on the shoulder.

My vehicle would not restart... the dealership took a look at it this morning, and their preliminary findings are that the engine threw a rod, there's metal shavings, and some liquid (water?) in the engine.

I'm still awaiting their full estimate of the damage.
