Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

2002 Pontiac Grand Prix starts then chokes down and want start

I have a 2002 Grand Prix and when the car's temp gets hot and you shut the car off to pump gas or run in a store for about 5 or 10 mins and come back the car will start up fine but then it chokes down and will not start back up until it sits for a little bit. If you try to start it back up it will sound like it is gonna start but it doesn't almost like the engineis flooded but it isn't. It use to only have to sit for a min or two but the other day I had to wait for about 40 min. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? Someone has mention the ingnition control module and the coils but not sure if this is what is causing the problem. When hooked up to the computer the car didn't throw any codes. Can someone help me please!!

My 97 grand prix idles fast when i start it, normally, if i let it run for a little bit, i can shut the engine off and restart it and it gets better...any ideas?

It runs fast because the choke and or high idle are set. This is normal, after it warms up, give it a little gas and let off, it should idle down.

The temperature gauge on my 2002 grand prix dose

the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.

02 grand prix temp rises over 210 then drops back down. heater

dear friend-there is a couple of things you can do to find the problem, when the engine is cold remove the radiator cap start the engine then look inside to see if the water is circulating, all so look for bubbles in the water,if there is bubbles, you might have a blown head gasket,if there is circulation the water pump is ok,then get the engine up to working temp, then feel both the top and bottom radiator they should be the same temp,if not then the termostat is at fault

Starts and runs 3-5 seconds and shuts down

Sounds like your security system is shutting the car down. You should be able to leave the key on for 15 minutes and it will reset itself. Make sure you are using factory keys, and they are in good condition.
