Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

Toyota troubleshooting Have 1985 Toyota pickup, 22R engine, standard transmission, no AC. Have spark to plugs, burn OK, compression 165lbs all cylinders. When cold, has a very bad miss! Abates when engine is warm, backfires occasionally, excess carbon in exhaust, poor mileage. Replaced spark plugs & wires, rotor & cap, vacuum lines. Need to check timing, carb gasket, coil & distributor coil pickup? Needs ohm values for O-2 sensor & coil. Other suggestions?

SOURCE: 94 olds hard starts when warm, starts when cold and runs rich

If you can get a fuel pressure gauge, check and see if the pressure is 16 to 24 lbs after the engine has warmed up.
I would connect the pressure gauge when the engine is cold, make sure it does not leak or touch anything hot, place the gauge between the hood and the windshield and drive the vehicle until it is at the temperature you feel it "starts hard". Shut the engine off and try to repeat the no start or hard start and make sure the pressure is correct.
Also, when you shut the engine off, watch the pressure and make sure it holds and does not drop to (0 LBS) of pressure.
One last question, has the fuel filter been changed in the past 30K.
Let me know.
Regards,

Need to change engines

If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.
