Question about 1996 Buick Regal Olympic Gold
The system is designed to default to the defrost mode when there is an issue. Usually, it is caused by a loss of vacuum to the a/c/heater control panel. The vacuum line goes from the engine, through the firewall and into the car and connects to the control panel. Also, there is a vacuum storage reservoir under the hood to store vacuum so when you go up a steep hill, the system won't go to defrost mode due to lack of vacuum.
Check the vacuum lines and reservoir for leaks and proper connection. Usually it's a thin, black hard plastic line under the hood. report back.
