Hard to say, mechanic failure can be any time, specially with car. everything are in question, some car can go 200,000 without problem and some goes 500 with tons of problems.
How is the car so far? you have to base on how, where, when you are with car. what are you going to do in the coming year.
do some research on the Internet, lib., see what is most likely problem you will encounter during the coming years.

I have worked in a Ford dealer for 20 years, here is what u can expect, at least one transmission failure, a water pump and a power steering pump, possible constant velocity joints or grease boots.

There is a switch on the trans that goes to your computer to let it know what gear you are in. It can go bad and cause these probs. You may have to replace it.

Check the boots on the CV joints. If one cracks and the grease flew out, the joint may be going bad.

Has the exhaust ( catalytic converter) been check for proper flow? I would try a test pipe to by-pass converter and see if that helps. You used to be able to buy them, but a good exhaust shop can make one pretty quick, and then try it.

Ford excursion limited 7.3

a 7.3 with 97K miles is just getting started on it's lifespan. These motors will last for sometimes 300K miles with regular service. They do have a 100K powertrain warranty so you're close to out of warranty on this one. The transmissions and torque converters were sometimes weak, but if you treat them right, they'll last.
Personally, I've got a ;'01 Limited since 2003 and I've got close to 180,000 miles on it... I've done regular service on it, brakes, changed the tranny out, have a banks kit on it, and it runs like there's no tomorrow.
Great rig, highly recommend a diesel.
Even tho ford isn't making the Excursion any more, the Super Duty is around to stay for a while so there'll always be service parts for the Excursion...
Hope that helps in your decision... KEN
