This is most probably the thermostat that needs to be replaced. It is a rather inexpensive repair or if you feel up to it you could probably do it yourself. It is well worth looking into because an engine that runs too cool will consume more fuel than necessary.

Good luck!

3/4... maybe you mean it runs a tad too hot? Still probably the thermostat. In that case it is also good practice to rinse through the find of the radiator with the garden hose to clear it from debris. However if it is constantly running at a slightly too hot or too low temp, it is almost always the thermostat. Remember to change the coolant fluid every second year.

My 1996 golf 3 Gli has always maintained a 90'C temprature but since yesterday night it has gone as far as 100'C. I took it for a minor service over the weekend, had spark plugs changed, oil filter...

the easiest fix would be to replace the thermostat. it might not be opening fully. an engine not running at the correct temperature might cause drivability problems. other causes might be a clooged coolant system, which would require a flush treatment. a partially collapsed hose. or a bad water pump. also, if air was trapped in the system, the car would run hotter. what did the mechanic say about it?

1989 golf turns over, new distribitor and starting

Did you use electric grease on these parts, the plug wires, and coil pack need this grease on there. It prevents moisture and wetness from rain getting within the components and causing mis-fire. Did it rain or was it cold outside to produce moisture. Grease is $2 for small pack. I just worked on a 95 VW, changed the cap, rotor button, spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, new air filter, fuel filter. His would run fine, but would cut off sometimes up to hours until the moisture dried. After tuning it up, he no longer has the problem. He goes through water puddles to see if it will quit, but it hasn't yet. Worth a $2-$3 try.
